30/30 and Trail Boss

I have never had much success with Trail Boss. Yesterday was a day for off hand shooting practice and burning up some TB to be replaced with 5744 when, just for amusement I decided to reload 4 cartridges with TB (8.4 gr or 1.9 cc Lee dipper) with the Lee 120 gr RNGC boolit. Offhand my groups were running 4" with the buckhorn sight at 80 yards (I am not that good) when I tried the TB + 120 boolit. The group went 2-3/4". I can't wait to try that again when we get another rare sunny day.:). For the record, the rifle is a Mossberg lever 30/30 but not the tactical monstrosity.

Did you use the gas check with those, or leave it off?

I am trying to find a plinker load that doesn't care about a GC, but every load I've tried shoots better with one on.

Might have to try your TB load (a little lighter since ill be shooting 150 gr) this weekend.

I use the LeeTL314-90-SWC with 7.0grains Trail Boss to good effect:

and here is a more recent target, five shot strings with Lyman Aperture sights on a Win 1894, the triangle has 4 inch sides. It shows how variable TB is - the 6.5grainis sprayed and then the much better group at only .5grain increase.

I have not had much success with more traditional boolits - the 150grain Lee and TrailBoss.

I've had pretty good luck with Trailboss with 170gr Lazercast bullets in a couple of 30-30's. I used both 9.2grs (Lee 2.2 dipper) and 10.5grs. (Lee 2.5 dipper). Groups run around 1" @ 50yds. I do gas check the bullets. I'm anxious to try my own bullets with the same loads but haven't had the opportunity. I've also had pretty good luck in an '06 with 17.6 grs. and the same bullet.

For simplicity's sake, I just gas check all of my 3O cal boolits. With that TB load I probably don't need to but I use those same projectiles at higher velocities in other guns.
