I have been shooting the RCBS 308-165-SIL boolit from a friends 1917 Enfield. It is OK. I used 2400 and 4198 so far but he would like a slower powder since he has a lot of it.
he left 4064 here but I made him take 4350 and 4831 back home. I don't want to go full power or reduce loads with either.
The problem is finding cast loads.
I need suggestions.

Try a few at 47 grains 4064 with a circa 168 grainer. This is logic from a national match load of years gone by in the 308 M14, 168 BR Sierra, 39 grains 4064. ... felix

Logic used:
(60gr case/50gr case)*39gr powder = 47gr powder; Speer book starts at 45gr for 2400 fps in the 3006 case size....Lead loads: start at 41 and up it until a ROUND group comes into focus. ... felix

Thank you so much Felix.

woah the 165 silh won't take that velocity and produce accuracy.
i'd be starting with more like 31grs.

A big +1 on this ^. 30-35 grains of 4064 should be the range you're looking in. Don't discount the 4350 though, 45.0 grains gave me pretty good results in my own modified Springfield under the 311-291. I got 2,200 fps and 2 1/2- 3 inch groups going that route. Not great, but for deer where I hunt, it'd do just fine.

Back in the late 80's I used to shoot a 1917 in the DCM shoots at the local club. My load was Lee cast 160grain round nose with 52 grains of Accurate 8700 for about 1800 fps. I don't think they make 8700 anymore, so I bought a couple bottles of the surplus WC867 from Wideners to use when my supply of 8700 runs out. The WC867 recommends using 8700 data.

All sounds good. I have nothing to do today with the snow---as if I ever have anything to do anyway! :drinks:
Good time to make up some loads.
4198 was giving me around 1-1/2" but Pete doesn't have any and I am almost out. None of the stores have any powder. I was using 27 gr, no idea how fast. It is not the time of year I want to fool with the chrono. He only wants 100 yards too.
He brought his Savage in 7mm-08 for me sight with his jacketed loads. I sighted for 200 yards and was getting well under 1", one group was 5/8" and the next, center bull was 11/16". This would make a great cast shooter. Just can't beat a Savage!

How about slightly reduced loads with 4895 ? theres some formula for this from the powder makers.

He has none. Obama has ruined us big time.

Doesn't Jeff Bartlett or Weidners still have 867/872? You might talk your friend into joining you in a buy if you shoot any rifle now. I just loaded 60gr over 311291 for my 03A3. Hope to shoot it this Saturday.

I might shoot my Swede every two years! :coffee: I use Varget and it is getting low. I shoot almost 100% revolvers. Hard on SS to buy powders plus hazmat.
I checked Powder Valley and they only need one page that says "out of stock!"

I would recommend starting at 28 gr of 4895 (any flavor but I prefer H4895) and using a 3/4 gr dacron filler. However since the guy was sent home with 4350 and 4831 I'll suggest starting at 32 gr of either, use a 1/2 -3/4 gr dacron filler and work up in 1 gr increments until the accuracy spot is found then tweak the load +/- 1/2 gr.

I can do that because I have the powders. The fear is still down loading slow powders even with filler.

i'm still waaay leery of using 4350 in a reduced load of any sort.
i have reduced 4831 a few times but have generally used a filler untill i got over 90% fill.
just about the time it starts to clean up without the filler you are over the velocity edge.
i'm using the short cut version in my 308 right now and i'm hovering between the super small amount of filler, and one more grain of powder ballance, between clean and accurate.
i might try a kicker to get to 100% load density and to clean the burn up too.

powder shortages suck, and the price afterwards is worse.

.30-06 bolt action, 180-grain boolits, and 39.5 grains of H-4350 always worked well for me, getting right at or a shade over 2K fps. No filler, no tricks. Lyman data starts somewhere around there. Sorta kinda dirty but accurate. Not sure how well it will work with a 15-grain lighter boolit.
