Luckily, the only damage is I have one shade support in the next county...

Could have been much worse![smilie=1:

Try replacing the metal supports with wood dowels. Cheap to replace and won't cause any damage to the box if hit.

Yep - wooden ones rule, and make spares - helps to paint the "zone" on the sticks as well

I got mine back running again with parts from DTKnowles for a very reasonable price. Good Man!

Someone here suggested straws to replace the aluminum shade holders. My local DD has 12 inch straws that are orange.:)

Someone here also suggested a steel plate on a plant hanger in front of the Chrony. I am doing this now, but would have rather bought powder or primers with the $$ I needed to replace my Chrony.

Welcome to the club.

The chrony grave yard is almost as big as Arlington National by now. So far, mine has only been wounded a couple of times. I use the wooden Shish Kabobs (sp?) skewers as crutches for the shades.

LOL, two time member here ! (I'm a little slow). Two Chrony's, two kills. Three hits, though - (38 super not recomended for clean kills unless vitals are hit)

Last one hit with a max load of WC820 under a 580g boolet from 500 S&W. No worries about tracking , DOA, gibblets all ovwr the place !

I was hoping this wasn't a post from the person I just sent a chrony out too...

I recommend weedeater line, just cut a length and make a loop of the brightly colored line.

There are two types of chrony owners, those who have shot their chrony and those who WILL shoot their chrony.

There are two types of chrony owners, those who have shot their chrony and those who WILL shoot their chrony. No, there is a third kind. Those who have set up their Chrony's and watched their nephew with a brand new scoped Mini14 place a bullet right through the digital screen because said nephew did not tell you he had not sighted in his scope yet. But my fault, because I did not ask.

Welcome to the club Sweetpea, but technically you are not yet a Chrony Killer. You are a Shade Trimmer 1st Class.:bigsmyl2:

Yeah, well... I was using my blackhawk in 41 mag with 250gr boolits...

A direct hit surely would have been a DRT!:(

Got mine too.
First time with 2 gas checks.
Next time with 230gr RN .
Just the shade support though.
Guess I'm a shade trimmer too.

It was just a little embarrassing though when my son borrowed it.

I've done it, once. The chrony I shot was giving me fits and in frustration and lacking patience I finally pulled one low. Hated that frak'n chronograph. The image of it and the tripod going *** over tea kettle makes me laugh though.

Make sure and buy extra skyscreens when you order them. You will eventually use them. I belong to the club also.

In addition to listening to NPR...

I blasted my Ohler 35P the first time out. It really was my last string of fire when I drilled two of the skyscreens with my CB 44mag 275gr HP's. right before that cylinder full I'd been clocking the cup points at about 1400fps. the most amazing thing is that the unit worked after. big chunks missing from the third screen. .432" holes in the middle one. Boy was I glad I'd spent $600 on my chronograph.

Wait a sec, I just shot $600 worth of test equipment? Well any way, it still worked, and for less than $80 I was able to make it look like new and have some spare parts.

Maybe Chronographs are like WWII bomber crews and should be retired after surviving 25 sorties?

Have not shot the guts in mine yet, but had a real scare a few years ago. I was testing out some 45-70 loads with surplus powder. Fired and watched the Chrono and tripod go over. When I picked it up and looked at it I saw the front was indented with marks that matched the IMR 5010 that I was using. Kept that Crono for a few more years and then sold it to a fellow who always wanted it, and bought a new one with a printer.

I'm still using my 2 old Chrony's. Need to make some new cardboard shade holders. Newest one took a 265gr .41 bullet to the back timer last month. :(

You beat me to it!!!

I guess I'm a Shade Trimmer 2nd Class? I hit the support twice. I have replaced with wood dowels (and epoxied the socket), but the plastic straw suggestion may have some merit!

It is amazing how easily you can forget to check alignment and position of your Chrony before you start shooting!

I wonder who holds the record for the Most Chronys Shot? Not a record that I would want/could afford to hold. :Fire:

Ouch.....that sucks. You didn't even get a chance to kill it yourself! Times are bad when a man is denied the right to kill his own chrony.

a 175 gr SMK fired at 2600 FPS has enough killing power to kill a chrony with one shot. The 8x57 firing a 170 gr rn over a max dose of IMR4895 or BLC-2 has equal killing power on the elusive chronograph. I have not tested handguns...yet.

Yeah, it was pretty surreal when it happend tho. I had the Chrony mounted on a camera tripod. His first shot, the whole thing rocked back on the two rear legs and just kind of tilted on backwards real slow and fell on over. My nephew and I looked at each other and couldn't help but laugh. I said, "You Got it man!" That was the only thing I thought of at the time.

One of my problems has been testing things like shotguns and muzzleloaders with sabots. The wad from a shotgun shell took out one skyscreen. A sabot from my muzzleloader took out another. I don't even use sabots. But I had a few and thought I would play around with them.

Hi,
My Name is Robert and I shot my Chrony. When I first saw threads like these I said "No, no not me. I could never shoot my chrony" but soon realized I was nothing more than another chrony killer in denial.....

Fortunate for me they have a great trade-in program. For $79.00 + $12.50 S&H + my old chrony as a trade in they will send a brand spanking new one to me. I will save a few bucks over the actual cost and that is all it takes to make me happy.:)

I had mine for about 10 years when I tried to chrono my .45ACP ball rounds. I forgot that I had zeroed my sights and the first round hit the backstop but missed the Chrony. Normal folks would have stopped trying to chrono and sighted in their pistol, but I have never been accused of normalcy. Turns out my Kentucky windage skills are pretty good laterally but just a little low. Scored an X on the front screen and caught enough of the back sensor to scatter it all the way to the back stop. Chrony fixed it up in less than a month. Good company.

Hey, if any of you Chrony killers needs more fodder, they will upgrade the box (Beta version) for less than the cost of a new device. Make me an offer shipped to your door.

When i got mine last year I made a angle iron holder with a 3/4 plate at a steep angle to deflect any bullets I said to myself this will protect it! Well the 30-06 bullet hit the very top of the 3/4" plate and sent a very small fragment into the top of the screen, it still worked but couldn't read top of the numbers. I sent it in to be fixed in 1 week they called for my CC# $44 total bill, I got it back the next week. After looking at the invoice it only cost $26 in parts and labor the rest was shipping $18 to send it back. I got some surplus powder in need to load up, so l will see what happens.
