I've start developing a CB load for a nicely sporterized (looks like in the 50-60s) 1891 Argentine. My first sighting-in rounds through it today:
180 grain Lee .311 boolit--beagled then sized to .314. gas checks
9 grains of Red Dot (just a first load to sight in).
Boolits were seated long so that turning down the bolt pushed them into the rifling. (BTW it's the original military barrel with crisp rifling, cut back to 20" and nicely recrowned.)

I was surprised with 1" groups at 50 yards right outta the gate. This is nearly as good as what I get with Jacketed ammo driven by 2400.

Question for those who have worked with Argies: Is 2 minutes/angle as good as I can hope for, or should I expect it to improve with load work?

You can get close to 1 hole groups (of 5 rds) @ 50 yds when you say the right words and worship the right diety.

I've shot 1/2 " groups with mine @100yards with Dutchman's modifiers (words & diety)
My barrel is uncut, 205 grain NOE 314299, 20 grains of 5744

hi Jim

I have Lyman 314299 that drops from the mold @ .303" nose, .314" body. I've not tried 5744 with any cast bullet rifle load except 12,7x44R Swedish rolling block. But I will save your load data and give it a try. My 1891 has shown more promise than the 1909.

That's a beaut Dutchman.
I still get compliments on the scout scope mount you helped me with. Thanks again!

1 1/2 - 2 moa is what i expect out of my M91s and M1909 using issue or reciever sights. With a scope (my "Evita M91 wears a 3X) I find 1 moa 5 shot groups are quite possible but 10 shot groups run 1 - 1 1/2 moa (100 yards) with either the C312-180-2R at .312, the GB C314291 or the 314299 at .314. I use 5744 at 1800 - 150 fps and 4895 at 1900 - 1950 fps.

Thanks the info is helpful. I'll try tuning loads. I've got another 1891 long rifle with a mismatched stock and a Lyman receiver sight, that does much better than the sporter. I need to methodically work on loads this spring.

You might also want to try some Bullseye/Unique reduced loads over that same boolit w/o GC. These groups were shot at 50 meters from a 1891 "Argie" Cavalry Carbine (locally known as the "Little Mule" because of its stout recoil when using military rounds). Same boolit than yours, non sized, moly-coated, w/o GC.

The barrel is only 17" long and the sight radius is even shorter than that. So may be these loads can perform even better out of a long barreled & scoped 1891 rifle.

Hope that helps.

Scared, or hopeful? These old guns are pretty, at least to me.

Very nice looking `91 carbine, looks for the world like a "Mule Stomper" that I know about! Will have to try the reduced loads in my `09 and `91.Robert
