Just trying out some H4895 with a 350gr Laser Cast FP. Some respectable results at 40gr and 45gr, others not so good.

Anyone doing well with H4895 in the .45-70? Trying to stay at 350gr but would go to 405gr if needed...

Thanks.

Have shot a couple of thousand 4895 with 405gr hardcast bullets in my 45-70's, and had fine results. Only problem was the leading from the hardcast bullets. I did try many suppliers, and did not see a discernible difference. Switched to real bp with a soft bullet (20:1) and never looked back.

With the 405 it would be fine. Not a load for the feint at heart. I shot the 425 RD with around 47 gr I believe. Deer didn't like it at all.

I use 4895 (several flavors including "H") under 350 - 500 gr bullets for TD level loads (37 gr under a 405 gr cast bullet). I've also shot quite a few hard cast Laser Cast of 350 - 405 gr with 4895. Suggest you use a dacron filler (1 gr) under the 40 gr load for a start and work up to whatever 45-70 load level your rifle is designed for (you didn't mention). The dacron filler will improve the ignition and help accuracy.

Thanks.

I'm retrying 39, 40, 44 and 45 as soon as the wind dies down. I have never used fillers for smokeless rifle but I am aware of the great debate about them. I do see skeletons at the lower loads. I will also try the 37gr and 405 in the Ruger #3.

I used farina in a cap and ball revolver. Is there a rule about reducing charges if using farina in a smokeless case?

Use dacron in the 45-70.

Larry,

Ready to load up some for OB...confirming the new (as of year 2020) Australian made H4895 would burn like the older lots...going with 37gr and 1gr dacron...I'm finally using up stuff from the 90s...got the dacron ready to go and the BE load with the 350gr shoots great in my OM Trapdoor...
