I think this would be about the perfect bullet for my #4 Mk. 1. How many grains would this bullet cast at with wheelweight? This is a gas checked bullet, right?

I have a double cavity Lyman 31141 I have used for better than 30 years. The as cast bullets weigh in at 174 to 175 gr depending on which batch of WW I use. In a sporterized 03A3 w/scope the best groups were of sub MOA. If I told you the group size you wouldn't believe it.

Out of my mold collection (sparse I might add) it gives best accuracy in 30-06 and NEF 30-30. I would love to have one as a 6 holer.

I will have to duct tape an old simmons scope to my 03a3 and see if I can best those one holers, I'm gonna fire TWO shots at least :-)

I'm interested in one.

I would like a bullet of straight Wheelweight metal with a body diameter of no less than .311 up to as much as .314. The ogive diameter I would like would be .3015 to .302 at the largest.

I plan to use this bullet primarily in .30-30 (M-94), 30-40 (Krag) & 30-06 (Various).

Have Fun, JCherry

David, you need to let the crew know what your thinking is on this custom run. Are you going to do an exact copy of the Lyman slug or are you thinking of revisions? It's a very good design just as it sits, so long as it meets minimum dimensions in WW (.300x.310).

You might consider a direct copy of the Lyman and just goose the 'as cast' diameters a thou or so with WW.

Page 4 of the group buy on the 311407 has a pic of the modified 311041 that looks pretty good. If this is the mould to be used count me in so long as the mould will drop .314 of wheelweight alloy for my Enfield #4 Mk. 1.

OK, I am interested in an exact copy of the original. Willbird traded me a couple of hundred for some lee soup cans and some HBWC. Well, 31141's are here and I love em just the way they are. Each band gets bigger as you move to the back of the boolit. Gas check fits perfect, Nost is slightly tapered, and a flat melpat for those that hunt. The ones I have measure .970 long without the gas check in place. Its supposed to be 170 grain boolit from #2 alloy. 314 is too big for ME, but we can compramise on the OD, I am thinking .312/301 from wheelweights.

I thought this had died out after only getting one response.

The drawing is still there, but hard to read. If 452.1 has already done a drawing, perhaps he could re post it here.

Willbird

I for one will be vocal on this issue, My Lyman 31141 single cavity works like a dream in WW metal doing the BruceB. I would want a 6 cavity to do that as well, with just a light tap all 6 should drop from the mold.

I'll settle for whatever kind of grease grooves we have to have for that to happen..........

I'm in for one but only if it's an exact copy of the 311041. However, I'd also like an exact copy but with TL grooves.

David R

I am surprised, I started this topic quite a while ago, got one response, then all the sudden everybody is jumping on the bandwagon. If I get this mold, when you open the Lyman 47th edition to 308, I will have every mold on the pages. I even have a 311644, but it doesn't shoot in MY guns.

I guess I am hooked.

Looks like we are going to do it. Working on getting drawings.

I never thought of a TL Rifle boolit, but if you could get it in the right size so it could be shot unsized, it would be great.

Maybe another group buy for that one. Lets let this one play out, then if all goes well on this one, I will do it. I think I have 7 30 cal molds. I have two 30 cal guns and a 32-20 TC contender. I have to buy more guns.........Maybe an 03A3. I always wanted a 30-30 bolt gun.......

I've got a Savage 340 in 30/30 and it doesn't like this mold at all. It favors the bigger nose of the 311291. On the other hand my 94 Winchester shoots the 311041 better than anything I've tried. I suspect that the Marlins would also favor the 311291 especially those with micorgroove.

David R

452.1 thank you I was going to ask you if you could post the drawing. On my browser, Its not too clear, I can't even read the text. But from what I gather, the "new version" is tapered instead of having a driving band in the front. Is that correct?

Speaking for most of us here, we want .312 with wheelweights, and a .300 or .301 nose, I am not sure which. We would also like round (radiused is that a word?) grease grooves so the boolit drops from the mold.

Looks like we are up to 12 so far.

I think Lyman calls it a tapered ballseat on the 311644.

452.1, I GOT IT!

I like the front band and the square lube grooves. Both of the CB shown have square lube grooves. I do not have a 31141 mold or a CB from this mold to measure to know how close the CB is to 0.312, but a WW CB in '31141' that measued 0.312 would be useful. Can always make it smaller. Not as easy to bump up.

Old version specs:

1. 0.311" to 0.312" drive bands behind crimp groove work well.
Most 30-30 chambers won't accept a bullet much over
0.3115" to 0.312".

2. 0.300" nose and below do NOT work well because they
won't touch much of anything, at least in my rifles.
0.302" nose jam up in some rifles. Nose should be
from 0.301" min. to 0.3015" max. 0.301" would be
good to shoot for.

3. The band in front of the crimp groove is critical if you want
accuracy. 0.302" doesn't touch at all. 0.303" touches some.
Maybe 0.304" would do it.

Various people have stated that they want an 'original' 311041. Just what is that? The bullet I sent 45 2.1 was a lyman mould labled 31141. It came in a white cardboard box with black stripes. Not sure what years they used those boxes. So it isn't a 'new' design but I feel that lyman changes things as cherries wear out and sales vary. So it is possible that there are a number of designs out there with the designation 31141 and eventually 311041. Subtle changes but dimentionally different. So I feel that we need to start talking numbers, designs ect. I don't have the 'other' design so I can't talk to that, but I feel the changes that were made on my version were made to favor or allow for the marlin microbore. Where the winchester bore is .308/.300 the marlin is 308/.303.

The black, gray and white boxes date from the period 1969 - 1978 when the former Lyman Gun Sight Corporation was owned by the Leisure Group consortium; the gray-painted tools also date from this period. In 1978, Lyman's Centennial year, J. Mace Thompson bought Lyman out from Leisure Group and it became the present Lyman Products Corporation. This may help in dating various Lyman items - IF they are in their original boxes. It is not surprising that profiles of specific bullet designs varied from cherry to cherry during this period. floodgate

Idahoser,

You just paid around $56.00 for a Lee six cavity mold to cast a 31141 cast bullet, right purdy looking thing of which there are pictures further back on the thread.

Better make sure your wheelbarrow is in good shape and the tire is aired up because you will need it to move boolits from near the lead pot to over by the lube sizer :-)

Idahoser,

Nice handle, WELCOME to the board.

First as willbird said, you just bought a world famous Old style Lyman 170 grain nose bore riding flat point. Great for a thuty thuty. Its in a 6 cavity mold so you can pour em faster than you can shoot em. I can pour over 500 in a half hour, but I think I am the oddball.

The gas check is for velocities over 1200? Depending on who you are, but this is a Rifle boollit, so for me a gas check is a must. It keeps the barrel from leading at higher velocities. I like to shoot my rifle boolits over 1600 fps so they do not cross over the sound barrier on the way to the target. This could decrease accuracy.

Gas checks keep the powder from burning the base of the boolit. They can also scrape out any lead that was left from the last shot. They make for a nice consistant flat base that helps accuracy. They can also prevent gas cultting of the boolit which will cause all kinds of havoc, all which are bad for accuracy. It makes em sort of like a Jack*t*d boolit.

Again, Welcome and thanks for ordering. You will not see this mold for months, so after I post that I am taking checks, send yours and forget about it. In a while and i don't know how long that will be, you will get a nice shiny new 6 cavity Custom made mold in the mail. You will also need a set of handles for it, avialable from midway or midsouth for less than fifteen bucks.

Sounds like I'll have PLENTY of time to decide how to proceed, but when I'm ready I'll have something I'm glad I got.

It may very well be that I'm not ready to start until this mold arrives, but I'm thinkin on it anyway.

Glad to see we're about there, I'm definitely in. I know it'll make Junior happy, he's how I got here.

As to why you would NOT want a gascheck, that would be if the intended purpose of the bullet may not need one. Most of what Elmer Keith did, or said he did, he did with plain based lead/tin alloy bullets.

Rifle bullets I want gas checks on, pistols generally not.

Hey Hoser, glad you made it over here! I consider the 311041 to be the Model 94 30-30 bullet. It was surely designed with a 30-30 case neck and chamber in mind. Just use plain ol' wheelweights for alloy, and don't worry about stuff like water quenching or heat treating, etc. Use plenty of lube on the bullets and load for 1900 fps or less muzzle velocity and never clean your bore again.

One hint: get the copper out of your bore before you start shooting cast.

You'll also find that the Lee 6-cavity mold is heavy duty and is a fine piece of craftsmanship. I suspect Lee takes extra care with these special order molds. Either that, or the guy who makes them is proud of his product. I suspect both.

In addition to mold handles you'll need a box of gas checks. I suggest getting a Lee .309" push-through sizing die. You'll need a sturdy press mounted on a sturdy bench as it takes some force to push a .311" bullet through a .309" die.

Install the gas checks by hand on the base of the bullets. Then lube them with Lee Liquid Alox. I run them wet through my push-through dies. If you run a non-lubed bullet through a push-through die you'll only do it once, I guarantee!

The bullets sized and gas checks seated, lube them again. Let them dry, then load. Basically, there's only two things different about loading cast vs jacketed: (1) Bell the case mouth slightly so the mouth doesn't shave lead off the bullet as it's being seated. I use the Lee Universal tool. However, the nose of long-nose pliers works just fine. Stick the nose in the case mouth and push down and turn. (2) You'll have to occasionally check the seater plug for lube build-up.

Speaking of seater plugs, a plug for round-nosed bullets works just fine on my 311041 flat-nosed bullets.

Heat source for melting: to start you can use a ladle and a cast iron pot on the kitchen stove or on a Coleman stove. I use Lee 10 lb bottom-pour pots. One for ww alloy, another one for pure lead for muzzleloader and other below 1200 fps loads. Only thing I would change if I had to start over is I would buy 20 lb Lee bottom-pour pots.

Warning! Don't let even a drop of sweat fall into a pot of liquid lead! Keep ANY source of moisture several feet away from your pot!!!!!!

Well Brian, you made it NUMBER TWENTY FIVE!

I want to start taking checks at the end of this month, that will be in 13 days. I want to start this one when the 311407 ends.

One group buy a month is all I can afford. This one makes me in on 3 right now.

Hmmm What will I buy in October?

Hello David

I took the name black river from the Cowboy Action Shooting group that I belong to. THE BLACK RIVER REGULATERS that shoot at the Capitol City Rifle and Pistol Club out of Olympia WA. The Black River is near the shooting range.

Cant wait to get a good 30-30 mold with 6 holes. I have two single cavity and one double cavity and it takes me a long time to cast enough boolits to make a trip to the range. A six holer will speed things up considerable. As soon as you are ready I will get a money order off to you.

Will be very interesting to see how casting speed and consistency compares between the Magma Caster and the 6 Cavity Lee.

Just had a Lyman new style 31141 2 Cavity converted to use on my Magma Caster. I can do about 650 357 bullets an hour with the Magma Machine on a cool day bringing cool air in from the outside for the cooling fan.

To date I've had 6 Lyman converted, 311316 32-20, 38 158 rn, 429215 GC,
38-55 GC, the 311041 mentioned, and 32-40 PB. They work fine, the Gas Check moulds have to be squeaky Clean I've learned. Mostly Wheel Weights with 2% Tin, but straight Lino and Lyman #2 drop the easiest. Absolutely sweetest moulds to use on the Machine are the Magma however. I normally will buy a box of commercial cast to try the bullet and if loads work up ok, then buy the Magma Mould. Then with the Star sizer, a 1000 cast and a 1000 sized in an afternoon can be done. Each casting session I then size bullets from a previous cast, just a brain thing I have about letting bullets cure if there is such a thing before sizing. I've learned to box sized and lubed bullets in an air tigh bag, (Wife's Seal A Meal Machine, when she's not home).

Will be watching for more of the group buys from now on.

I think I have it beat. I can pour 350 311291 or 311466 from a 2 cavity in 30 minutes. I can go just over 500 C312-1502R group buy 6 banger. Only problem is I can only pour for 1/2 hour then my back says "stop please". I put a rug in front of the pot one day and went for 50 minutes with the group buy mold. I ended up with 720 boolits and a sore back. 1/2 hour is it for me! Right now its cooling off, so I want to get ahead. It will be too cold in a month to hang around in the unheated garage. I have a small bench I bring inside in the winter to load or size and lube on. I have 3 - 3 lb coffee cans full of 30 cal boolits. One more of 45 colt. Waiting for the 454275 to come in and the BD45CM. Oh yeah and the 311407 and of course the 31141!

You sure do have it beat, that is fast work. The Magma Caster is entirely different seating arrangement which reduces the back fatigue and is the reason I bought the Magma machine. Tender back really destroys any type of rhythm I can muster.

I ordered the handles for the 311041 this morning. I know David has a lot to do, what with handling the money and getting the order out, and the Lee cutting the molds, and return shipping ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

This is the first time I have participated in a group buy. Does anyone have a loose wild-assed guess when we might see the mold in the mailbox. I'm not in a hurry, and dont mean to rush anyone, but I'm trying to get a handle on a timeline.

Actually, I've already got the ammo loaded for deer season and probably won't start messing with this mold till after Christmas, but I'm just trying to get some idea of how long these things take.

NMJ, send a PM and I will send you a snail mail and Paypal addy.

KB291,
I already told 452.1 our boolit designer I would donate and extra money to the site in his name for drawing up the boolit. Without his design we would be SOL.

This is a not for honcho profit system as far as I am concerened. As long as I don't loose any $s and I get one of these molds, I will be quite happy.

I am also glad this is going to be part of the first Mass purchase.

Most pitched in, Just like the Northereners "Aye". Most of them threw in a few extra bucks for shipping. A few didn't. I have been in business for a long time. I pretty much expect a few things like this. Its only a few bucks all the way around.

I made the first post on Aug 8th. Its been a long road, fun and interesting, but I will be glad when the last mold is shipped.

I recieved an ordere for 3 today from paypal and have one or two Money orders on their way. Checks are in the bank, I have the drawing...................

My notes show recommendations of Lyman #8, 413, or 465.

That's about all I can tell you. Of course, since it is a flat nose you could use a .30 flat nose top punch that's just a little bigger diameter meplat than the 311041.

Hi David R,

Looks like I'm too late to get in on your group buy for the #31141 six-cavity Lee mould. Do you expect to have any extra moulds? I can make payment right away.

Would you please be so kind as to place me first on a waiting list should a mould suddenly become available?

If someone bought 2 moulds and now decides that they only need one, I'd be willing to buy your extra mould. Just send me a PM (personal message) or email.

Thanks & Happy New Year,

Hello David R.

I've just became a member of this site. I have been here before surfing. I also have friends who have visited my usual haunt on the web.

I was totally unaware that a group buy was going on here in regards to the 311041.

If under any circumstances there is an extra mould available, I would be more than happy to purchase it.

I do realize that another has already asked for 1st chance if one of these moulds come available, so I can only hope for the best.

Repectfully,

I will be calling LEE next week about the status of our order.

Boolits measure .312 to .313 around the bands. Front band measures .307, Nose measures .302 right in front of the driving band. 175 grains.

I shipped em all Friday.

Lee got em right. They cut em just like 45 2.1 drew em.

I poured 880 in less than an hour Sunday.

I called Doug and left a message thank him for doing such a good job. I also told the girl on the phone to make sure his boss saw the note.

Well did the test cast this evening. A random boolit measured .3115-.3125 between the grease grooves. .304-.305 above the crimp groove and weighed 176.7 grs. This was one test boolit and I imagine the rest will fall within specs for my needs. My only other .30 cal mould is the Lee .309-170, Man! what a difference. This here is a proper boolit, I hope it shoots as good as it looks! Unfortunately it will be a bit before I find out. Planned loads are between 24.5 and 30 grs IMR 3031 and around 30 grs H4895. Will post when I have some range results.

I have 50 308 cases loaded with 3 powders waiting for me to seat the boolits and test fire them It also happens that last week or so ago I bought a savage 340 in 30-30. How is that for timing?

Murphy, like I told you before, I have one extra, so its yours.

I would like to hear some accuracy reports.

Enjoy fellas.

Got my mould last night, not too bad looking. This is my first Lee 6 cavity.

I'm either the lucky winner or the goat, my mould is labeled 1 of 62. Are these moulds lathe cut or cherried? It would be interesting to get a bunch of us to cast with the same alloy and temperature to see what our sizes are. Say mould #1, 15, 31, 46, and 62.

Your are all welcome. Yes, they are all 1 of 62. I thought if some one sold one later on, it would increase the value by $.02 Besides who wanted to get the Last one.

Mine was perfect. when pouring the boolits with the pot on 800, the bases were frosty and the noses were shiny. This told me I had the temp perfect. The whole batch came out that way. It was harder to tell after they hit the water, but I kept a few un quenched and hope to have my daughter the photographer take a few pics.

I shot them out of my Wally world stevens 308 today at lunch time. 1/2 to 3/4 inch groups at 50 yards. 3 or so inches at 100 yards because the wind was blowing like crazy.

Boolits were loaded so I could just barley see the top of the first lube grove. Charges were 9.0 Promo (red dot), 15 grains WC 820 and 44 grains of WC 860. my standard load for this gun with most any boolit. Groups were a horizantal spread from the wind. Promo and WC860 shot the best for me.

OK, I got the first range report in, lets see some more. Next is my savage 340in 30-30. I still only have 20 brass and am sizing them in a 308 sizing die. It works but only sizes 2/3 of the neck, nothing more.

Willbird, I will be glad to delete 100+ PM from my inbox and put this pile of envelopes away. I will do it again, but not right away. It was fun.

I have one mold left (yes murphy after yours) that I am going to raffle off in the eastern cast boolit shoot I am working on.

I think with alittle more work I can get this boolit to shoot as well as my 2 cavity 311644. It would be nice to pour 6 at a time and get the accuracy I want. I only tried one OAL, 3 powder charges and nothing more.

Mailbox giving off happy vibes as I approached & nice long red Lee box behind lid was reason. Arrived in good shape and my name inscribed in gold inlay on sprueplate as I requested. "One of Sixty-Two". Great touch.
Thanks Dave for heading up this one & all the hard work...Really!
