View Full Version : Interesting find...Mystery Case, .30-30 HS.
I was going through some mixed brass I picked up for my cartridge collection and found a wildcat. Did a little looking around because I'd heard of one, never seen it before and thought it was a .358 Hoosier but no, everything I looked at had diffrent dimentions. So, I went to the manuals and nada there either. The parent case is a .30-.30 Rem, necked out and cut to 1.737. Mouth dia is .358 and the length to shoulder is 1.386, do any of these dimentions sound familiar?
.30-30 on the left, mystery case and a 35 Remington( what I thought it was untill I noticed the rim.).

The dimensions given match, as near as I can measure, those of the 357 Herrett cases I have here.
Thanks guy's for the direction, it is a Herrett.

I was aware of a 35 Ackley Magnum but not a 35-30, do you have any more info on that one?

35/30-30 is pre Ackley. It is arguably our oldest Wildcat and is simply a 30-30 necked up to 35 Cal. Lots of 30-30 and 32 Win barrels wore out or became pitted from corrosive primers. They were bored out to 35 Cal and lived on in a round that will perform at least as well as the 35 Rem. I suppose there must be a 35/30-30 AI but I cant imagine it gives you much.

O-k, thanks for that, new info is always welcome as this was the first repurposed case I have come across. The simple fact that most if not all are reused. I will now be on the look out for a new project. ;-)

We did a couple 35 krag's yrs ago and at the time we could find nothing on it anywhere which I found strange. It's now offered in a couple single shots and while I used a Krag rifle in a very strong action it's a pretty good round.

Hummh, I've got two 30-30's, my dad's and my brother's. Gotta wear one of them out!
