I pulled out this little mold to cast some plinkers for some milsurps and found it actually dropped .322 which is big enough to try in my .32 Rem Model 8. I know it will not cycle the action, but there really is not any data for a 105gr boolit except high speed 100gr jacketed loads. It is pretty much a rimless .32 Win Special for those who don't know. Would the 10gr of Unique universal load from the sticky above push it to fast or would 8 be better?

bear with me as I hope to explain

I have a Ideal integral handle mould for the 311241 that was shortened to a 105 grain round nose boolit. 2 drive bands, 1 loob groove - I thought I was getting something else

I had bought it on evil-bay approx 15 years ago, was advertised as 311291.

Ideal quit making this type of integral handle mould sometime in the 1920’s so that kind of dates it. The interchangeable blocks replaced this style of mould.

anyway – I have a 30/30 single shot and love plinking

105 grain cast 20:1 sized to .313 to lessen the chance of gas cutting in the leade. seated to just cover loob groove

large pistol primer

2.5 grains Red Dot + ¼ sheet - new toilet paper to hold powder against the primer

approximates the 32 Colt’s RF from my rifle @1000 fps or so

on paper 5 shots just under a dime at 25 yards from a bench

off hand – miles of smiles

that 31950 is an ancient mould design from when small game from a center fire rifle was the norm. lots o families only had 1 firearm and it did every thing that needed done !
it begs the question how that severely altered 311241 came to be.

Lyman 3118 at 120 grains + 7.5 grains Unique = 1450 chronographed fps in 30/30

To give some ider of what might work

Plain base in rifles should / might not lead under 1400-1500 fps…especially if they fit the throat

Sounds like I need to try 7-8gr of Unique or use something faster. Thanks for the little bit of history as well.

Greg,

1/4 sheet NEW toilet paper? I assume the results of your tests with used toilet paper were crappy.

Load it over 2.7 - 3.2 gr of Bullseye. You will be pleasently surprised.

I ran out of cases before you posted that, but it will go in the next test batch. 7gr of Unique, sized to .323" and tumbled in thinned LLA went into 2" at 50 yds. The old springpole makes for an odd plinker since the recoil spring absorbs what little recoil is present since light loads will not unlock the action, and you really hear the clanks inside. On a side note, it looks like it will make a great cast rifle with my new Accurate Mold 155gr FN copy of the 321317 shooting 2-3" with every load I tried, even my full power Leverevolution jacketed load. It still has the factory open sights and I am pretty happy since it was designed to be minute of deer anyway.

6gr of Red Dot,8 gr of Unique,33.0 IMR 4350 all under 325-175 Lee plain based sized 323 in my model 14 Remington . That gave me about 1000,1200 and 2100 IIRC ,my books are packed at the moment.

You get 2100fps out of a plain base? I guess it could be done since excess pressure would probably be what stops others from getting there. Might take a pretty hard alloy though.

I will have to keep that last load in mind for my other mold, a new Accurate FN rendition of the 321317. The few mentions on the 'net of shooting cast in .32 Rem rifles is that the boolits can stand higher speeds than expected.
