Would like to cut a groove in the receiver of an old .22 to accept Weaver type scope rings. Which dovetail cutter should I use? 60 degree or 45 degree? Or should I just go ahead and try to set a Weaver base? Thoughts?

725, you have another option to check out. Brownell's sells scope base stock for both the small diameter .22 receivers (less than 1", usually around .840") and standard diameter .22 receivers (1" diameter). The stock can be bought to match your rifle's receiver diameter, top of the base is grooved for the rimfire 3/8" mounts. They offer this stock in 4" length pre-drilled and in 12" length non-drilled options. I obtained a section of the non-drilled stock for a Savage model 15 (small receiver diameter) that had been drilled and tapped before the rifle came to me, cut to length, drilled and counter-bored for the existing drill work, mounted and sighted a scope. This is a nice option for the smaller diameter receivers. Search Brownell's website for "dovetail scope base), product numbers are 080-031-841 and 080-032-101. They also offer flat bottom stock for flat top receivers. Good luck with your project.

Thanks, Thin Man. That would be the best way to go. This is a single shot .22 and the bolt needs an unobstructed receiver in back. The whole mount will have to go on the front part of the receiver.
