I went to a gun show in Denver today. I did not buy much, a 3 die set with some brass for a 25-20 for 20 bucks, an old Speer and old Hogdon #23 for $5, 100 30-30 cases for a buck and an old square tin can of 2400 for $3. One guy had some old molds for sale. Nothing much but some round ball Lees and a two cavity 311410 with handles in excellent shape. I bought the mold and brought it home. That is when I noticed it was not a plain square base. According to my book, that is what is should have been. I have not cast any boolits from it yet, but, it is definitely a tapered base. Is this normal? Has anyone else seen one of these before? I think I will keep it, but, I am kind of curious about it.:???: :???:

The 1957-58 First Edition Lyman "Handbook of Cast Bullets" shows #311410 as a bevel-base. The photo in the 1973 2nd Edition (and on CASTPICS) is sorta ambiguous, but could also be a bevel-base. I think yours is "kosher". Bullet was one of the first added by Lyman to the Ideal line in 1927 (Handbook No. 28), and has been carried (with a few gaps) in all the Handbooks and Annual Catalogs thru 2007. Originally a 130-gr. ".30 Cal. '06 Light Load Special", it is currently recommended for the .30 Carbine and 7.62 x 39.

Thanx Floodgate. I guess I kind of lied about my book. I actually looked it up on Ol Buffalo bullet mold table. I might still pour a few and see if the 30-30 likes them. If it does not, I might have to get an SKS and start reloading. That would not be the first time I had the reloading equipment before the gun!!!

I always thought about getting that mould, but the base threw me. If I was to run onto one cheap, I think I'd have the bevel removed. Me no like bevel base. Mucho bad tings happen wif bevel base IMHO.

My brother gave me a pile of Chey-cast bevel base 30-30 bullets and they shot like a champ in my rifle. If I had a Star sizer I wouldn't have a problem with bevel base moulds.

Bret,
Are your problems with bevel base shooting or pouring related?

The one I have here is bevel based. haven't used it for anything yet.

floodgate-

I'm going from memory here (hehe) but isn't the 311410 also called the 'Squibb' bullet?

and what would be a good ( Squibb ) load in the 30-06 and a 30-30??

inquiring minds want to know...

P.S. I found that boolit in a single cavity Ohaus mould, the box shows a bevel base but the mould has been reamed out. mould is marked Ohaus 30-130-S
box labeled .30 caliber 130 grain Semi-Pointed bevel base

Greg:

No, the "Squibb" boolit is #311413. Lots of loads listed for it in the older Ideal Handbooks, and in the "Rifleman" from the '30's and '40's. It is a pointed gas-check design - see CASTPICS/Moulds/Lyman Moulds.
