Hi
I'm after what twist is in my Ruger No3 in 45/70?
I'm just curious as to what it is and how heavy a boolit I can go and what length.
Any ideas?:)
I think I seen some where it might be 1-22 or 1-18,anyone?[smilie=1:
Thanks

Probably 1-22. There would be no reason to have the 1-18 in a barrel that short, not to mention that recoil with a 500+gr boollit would be brutal. The one that I had liked the 405gr bullets, cast and jacketed. And you can load that thing way to close to 458 mag ballistics. I did it once, fired 2 rounds and pulled the rest. But even the 1-22 twist will shoot the 500 gr boollit, that was the original loading.

Thanks for that,I thought it might be 1-22 but was not to sure.
Your right about one thing, these little guns are brutal when firing a 500gr bullet at near max velocities:( I can almost feel my should wincing in pain:-D
Cheers mate

I think it was the old Speer #10 that had a twist rate chart for production guns of the day. That should be about the right time for the #3. I can look it up if ya dont have one.

You can check it with a really tight patch on a jag. Start it in the barrel, then mark the rod at the barrel. Put a piece of tape on the rod back by the handle with a flag pointing straight up or down. Push the rod in so the flag rotates 180 degrees and mark the rod again against the barrel. Now just measure that distance and multiply by 2 and you have your twist.
If you have a Lyman reloading manual it is probably in there under 45-70 Ruger reloading data.
