Rummaging around in my mould box, came across a LEE 429-174-1R mould that I had forgotten about. Anybody have any experience with this bullet in a 44 Special? I had poured some up and had been using the evidently with sabots in my muzzleloaders. Came out lubed and sized at 175.4 grains, roughly 429 - 430 dia, naturally it is a round nose. Can't find data on it, jumps from 165 cast to 200 jacketed. What do one think about loading with start load for 200 gr jacketed in a Ruger Blackhawk Flattop 44 Spec?

So close to 165 in weight. I personally would look at starting loads for the 165 cast and I would look at more than one manual.

Lyman #45 manual (1970) shows a 180gr cast #429348

44 special

bullseye 4.0 691fps 6.8 1033fps
unique 7.0 877fps 11.5 1351fps
2400 13.0 714fps 20.0 1265fps
sr4756 7.0 617fps 10.4 1015fps
imr4227 14.0 683fps 21.0 1028fps

fired from a colt ssa 5 1/2" barrel

I think I would start with the starting unique load, and look for accuracy. I think the top end loads might be a bit much.

Thanks guys. I see that was a 1970 edition, so I would probably knock 1.5 grains off max to allow for the "new Unique". This will get me started. I have several reloading books, but nothing that goes back to that weight. After I started casting bullets, I very rarely shoot anything else. Best hobby I have, even beats fishing.
