I'm looking for a hunting bullet for my Contender super 14" 45/70.
Shots to 150m on blacktail deer, and large black bear....possibly / likely at 20m distance or less.
Considering COWW + 2% tin / 50% pure lead, aircooled, for an alloy.

Anybody shoot the NOE 350gr HP GC boolit?

How well does it shoot? Does it drop true to .460"?

I know / respect the pressure limits of the contender.....but still want to push the boolit to a decent hunting velocity.

I have that mould. It does drop a true .460, least mine does.
The HP is HUGE. I prefer the solid.

Prefer the solids for hunting? for accuracy?
Have you tried the HP on game?

Shot a deer with the HP. Cast too hard, shot too fast. Hit shoulder blade, blew nose off, deflected into neck. I did end up getting the deer but learned to be cautious with large p bullets for hunting. Alloy, cavity size, and velocity need to be balanced.
I have shot a deer with the solid too. Worked like a charm.

I have come to feel that a large flat nose in 45-70 is all you need. Expansion isn't really required. It also reduces the burden on getting the alloy and velocity just right.

Shoot the solid at 1350 to 1400 and never look back.

Thanks for the insight.
I was thinking that the HP looked pretty large.

Have you considered the Lyman #457122?

If the Lyman 457122 casts at .457", then that might be too small.
With no GC, can it be pushed to 1600fps with the alloy I had mentioned? Wondering about leading.

My 457122 doesn't cast near big enough for my Marlin. I just prefer the flat bore solids in 45-70 anymore. They kill just fine, are easier to cast, and come in multi cav moulds.

They normally cast .458 and with a slightly harder alloy, they will cast even bigger. No gas check is needed.
