I have a small lot of mil surplus 4895. My question is simply this, how does it compare to/with current loading data?

Over the last 40+ years using a lot of surplus 4895 I've found it compares to canister IMR4895 with some lots as slow as IMR4064. Use starting load data and work up as we all should and you'll be ok. Watch for the usual pressure signs and a chronograph is helpful as if velocities get above what the manuals say they should be you are pushing pressures. If loading for cast bullets then, again, use the satrting load and work up until accuracy goes south or you are at the "max" load listed. A dacron filler will improve ignition and burning efficiency depending on cartridge and load density.

If the lot is small that working up a load with a cast bullet will use more than you have then you could go with a known load of H4895 or IMR4895 and that cast bullet load using the milsurp 4895. It will be as safe and probably as good.

That works. This will be for for my 17.5in Encore in 375JDJ. I have loading data for both IMR and H data. Working with the 264 Lyman this will be fun.

Thanks for the help!

My milsurp 4895 is a little slower than canister 4895, but without a chronograph there is little one do to compare.

Still no pressure signs when I got my velocities to equal "book" values and it was fast enough and accurate so I quit right there.

I have a Chrony, but I still like looking for pressure signs.

It may be a while, but I will post results later.
