Is this mono or lino or other? I wrote the BHN according to my Lee tester on a few pieces.

Ya'll don't be shy now. I know I'm not the only one that has some of this stuff. What is it?

By appearance I would say it is monotype. The hardness values don't support monotype. Only those marked 24+ BHN would be monotype. The others are much too soft if the values are accurate.

Look here: http://www.lasc.us/CastBulletNotes.htm

You may not be getting a good reading from the thin pieces. I have not tried to test the mono that I have so can't comment on hardness variation. The thin pieces I have are softer than mono and I've been told they were used as spacers, so softer was not a hindrance in printing.

Hope this helps, but others can probably be more helpful.

I wouldn't trust your Lee tester results that much.

Think of it this way: "Mono" means "One", "Lino", mean "Lines of". Monotype has one letter, usually large block letters, but not always. Linotype has sentences or lines of type.

I'd be pretty safe saying that you have Monotype based on that alone.

I'd be right, too! You have some very nice Monotype there! Based on my experience, the spacers will be the same alloy as well.

All the mono I have is in blocks. One letter per block. Lino is generally in strips, usually with
many words, or a sentence. Some mono is large, some very small. Any lino I have seen is
about the same size - like the strip you show. Mono also comes with spacers, similar to your strip. Mike

I would say mono, lino is in much smaler/thinner type. Both are great for alloying other metals.

Back in the 50's and 60's I worked in small and large newspapers as a
Linotype operator. Also set some type by hand (monotype). All individual
letters are monotype. BNH should be about 28.
