I just picked up these bar's.
Can anyone help me identify them? Their a total of 14 lbs.
The smaller one I brought to a scrap yard and they shot it with one of those analisis gun's and it came back with the following.
SN 83%
SB 6.6%
CU 3.5%
FE 4.3%

The small bar has stamped on it ASTM2-4174

Just guessing but they have different grades of babbit and #2 could be number#2 babbit which is not the same as Lyman #2.
On the plus side I think the Babbit is worth 8 to $10 per pound if compound is known.

All babbit. Just add lead. Mostly good for adding tin.

So this is like pewter?
What do the symbols mean?
I'm at a friends using an IPad and can't do much.

The periodic table of the elements is your friend. I know a few but don't want to guess at all the ones you listed.

"Sn" is tin

Sb" is antimony

the xrf machines reading of iron Fe.
doesn't necessarily mean there is iron in the alloy.
if the machine is set to read iron and there is something else in the mix it will show iron.
the machine doesn't know what the other stuff is and it's just told to look for iron.
it could be nickel.

just treat what you do have as tin and you'll be fine.

I just found out I might be able to get another 10-15 bar's.
What size should I re-melt them to? 1lb or 1/2 lb?

melt them all together for a stable uniform mix and 1/4 pound bars to add to ol drippy or a 20 lb pot , you can save this step by just stiring a little in to into ol drippy , carefull melts fast

So I went back to the place I got the first bar's and he had another 20 or so bar's.
Is there a market for these here and what should I ask for it by the 1lb bar?

If I could get 20 of those (especially the top one) bars, I wouldn't sell any of them. They'd be
staying home for my stash. Mike
