Hey there I ended up with a rifle today. The markings on the reciever say "US carbine 30 cal" I don't know who made it and I didn't get the serial number before I made this post. I don't know much about this stuff I started out my day going to my local shop to trade for a new flintlock and ended up getting a remington 700 in 17 fireball and this carbine (long story). Can any one tell me if this is a real military rifle or a copy. And what locations would the identifying marks be. I'll get a serial number and post tomorrow. I don't know if this would be worth holding onto or not.
Thank you:???:

Without actually getting to examine your rifle, I can direct you here:

IF, repeat: IF it's a genuine US Carbine.... over the chamber it will say "US Carbine cal .30 M1"
.

Behind the rear sight it will have a (probably) 7-digit serial number because there were over 7 million manufactured.

Also behind the rear sight will probably be a maker's name...Universal, Plainfield, Iver Johnson, Auto Ordnance are NOT government manufacturers.

Behind the FRONT sight of an issue carbine you should find a date and possibly the ID of the barrel manufacturer.

If it has the adjustable rear sight rather than the flip sight you will have to look under the rear of the rear sight. Hard to see sometimes.

Thank you all here is the skinny on what I have. The serial# 19664 it does infact say US carbine 30 cal M1 on the reciever. I cant really see the whole manufacturers mark because it is under the rear sight almost completely all that I can make out is NA on the first line and INC on the second I thought that it might be national postal meter but the mark on mine doesn't match the national postal meter mark on the examples on the bavarian m1 sight also my serial number doesn't match the postal meter serial #'s. I cant seem to find an example of a reciever with an INC stamped as a manufacturing mark. I'll keep looking though. Thanks again

Might be worth pulling the rear sight so you can see the whole thing. If you do, post a pic of the receiver markings. I bet someone here has seen one once!

That is the one that I have thank you I was on that site and didn't see that manufacturer. My rifle appears to have been made after 1968 and has the markings that it should have.
Thanks again

I'll never forget the night when I had to take an M1 carbine along with a guy's other guns and put them into the property room for safekeeping as a result of the nasty, ongoing domestic disturbance the guy was having with a live-in girlfriend, per department policy.

The guy said he had the vary M1 carbine that his father carried in Vietnam, and it was his prized possession. I'm no expert on the carbine, but that had my interest piqued. I gave it a good look over as we were filling out the property form so he had a receipt, and I noticed "HIALEAH, FL" on the receiver. I really didn't intend to kick the guy while he was down, but I effectively did.

I was glad to see that the guy got a restraining order on the crazy hag before she got him sucked into a domestic battery charge and potentially ruined his life. With her out of the picture, it was no problem to sign off on the release so the guy could get his belongings back.
