View Full Version : Wildcat cartridge?

I was thinking of a possible wildcat cartridge and wondering if it has been done. The 30-06 necked up to .35 caliber is the .35 Whelen. Has anyone necked up the 8mm Mauser (8x56) to .35 caliber? If so, what was it called? I thought of possibly rechambering a 8mm Mauser to .35 Whelen, but like the idea of feeding from the magazine. So, the OAL would be a limiting factor.

I think the 9x57 was a fairly common cartridge in Germany. With an appropriate twist for cast I would think it would be excellent for our use.

Jim:
I had my Egyptian 8mm Mauser, rechambered to 8mm-06 Ackley Improved. The magazine just took a little lengthening by the gunsmith. This is one of my favorite rifles. I shoot a Hornaday 195 grain SP at 2800 fps.

There are factory made magazines that are long enough for the 30-06 class of cartridges. Look on the RCBS website for their wildcat die sets, might give you an idea if it has been done. Also check some of the reamer places like reamerrentals.com.
I converted a Turk to 6.5-06 and a 1909 Arg to 25-06.

I found the answer. It is the 9mm Mauser. (9.3x57)

The brass is commercially available.

It wouldn't be much to neck up 8mm mauser brass.

There is a 9.3 x57 [.362] and a 9 .57 [.356].

If I was going to rebore a 8mm I would go with badgeredds 35X60..

Nice long neck for cast and you can form cases out of 30-06 cases to the exact chamber length..
Get yourself a tight neck & throat (short and tight) reamer and you should have a very accurate cast bullet shooter..

Thanks for the plug, nrut! When I decided to build the rifle for this cartridge, I liked the idea of a slightly short 35 Whelen cartridge. It performs very well and because of the smaller case capacity, one can use a multitude of powders. Larry Gidson mentioned something very similar before I built my rifle and mentioned that something based on an original 8mm Mauser with the same shoulder location would probably contribute to excellent feeding. He was 100% correct. I love the cartridge and it is easy to form. A plus for it is that one can modify 35 Whelen dies (by shaving the bottom) and have cheap custom fit dies at very little extra cost.

At one time I was in possession of a 358 Win, 9x57 Mauser, and 35 Whelen all at the same time.
After thorally testing all I found the results to be just exactly what you would expect. The 9x57 fell precisely between the 358 and 35 Whelen in performance. A very practicle and usefull cartridge.
BTW my 9x57 had a 358" groove.

Dan,

The basic difference between your 9x57 and my 35x60 is 3 mm longer neck. I would imagine the performance is exactly the same. My theory when building the 35x60 was the increased neck length would be more cast friendly...otherwise there isn't squat difference.

I have actually shot Edd's 35X60 and I like it alot...I highly recommend that chamber.

If I did not already own a tackdriver of a Whelen on a Gew98 action??????........well maybe someday anyway...........just for the hey of it. Now if he would only leave it unattended for a bit....

Brass forming should always be taken into consideration. The 35-60 is a good choice because the brass is never too short if made from '06.

Using a tight-necked .35 Whelen reamer and short-chambering a millimeter and grinding the sizing die by the same amount seems like an excellent idea for good fit with economical and plentiful brass.
