Gents, I have a quick question. I haven't bought lead in years. I'm well stocked on WW, pure lead, and some Linotype. The last time I bought Linotype I paid .50 cents a pound.

Now I have a gentleman, who is offering to sell me two 55 gallon drums, 2034 pounds of Linotype lead @ .85 cents a pound.

Is this a decent price nowadays?

Your input would be greatly welcome.

I'd jump on all you could afford at .85/Lb!

I'd say go for it! I was only able to locate one guy locally willing to part with any. He said he "might" part with 40# at $1/lb

Typically sells on ebay for close to $2.00/lb + shipping.

I thank you all for your input.

It has been quite a while since I've purchased any lead and haven't kept up with the pricing. I've arranged to buy the entire lot and will be picking it up late next week. The guy I buying this from also has three tons of mixed clip on/stick on wheel weights that he wants .42 cents a pound for, so I may pick up a 55 gallon drum or two of that while I'm at it. I figure that I don't know when a deal like this will pop up again. There is a little added cost to this as I have to pick this up at the Port of Oakland and bring it home to Reno. But what the heck, I need to pick up some other stuff in Sacramento.

Two words for you.......

---- yeah!!!! (didn't say that I could POST both of 'em........)

If all else fails, you can always buy him out and re-coup some of the cost by selling here @ 1.50-1.75/pound (might not be the most you could get for it, but it'd sell fast at that price......)

Last time I bought a HUGE amount of linotype, two years ago, I was able to talk the guy down bit for the huge buy. In my case it was 27 cents a pound final price!
Wow

What I did was sell 1/2 of the lino at a buck a pound, making a good profit, and leaving myself with a LARGE stash of FREE lino when I was done.

You might try negotiating a bit, and selling some at a profit to get free lino when you're done.

Duke your absolutely right. I'm going to see if he'll offer a price break if I take everything he has, the lino as well as all the WW. I'm in a position right now where I could afford to do this then part some of of out. It can't hurt to ask.

Great deal - Linotype is over 2 bucks a pound on eBay - and the larger monotype or foundry type is bringing even more. Definitly worth your time to sort it out. The large ingots ("pigs") that came from print shops tend to bring more also - why, I don't know.

I just wish I could find linotype at less than $1.00 per pound!!! The last time I bought linotype I paid $1.50 plus shipping. ( 100 Lb on E-bay). By the time I melted it, fluxed it and made ingots I figure I lost about 20%. Not the best deal I've ever made but I could see King Obama was going to get reelected and I figured I'd need a lot of extra ammo........

You really need to study up on fluxing (actually reducing) your alloy. I processed 400 or so pounds of linotype and the leftover dross would barely fill a snuff can. IT CAN BE SAVED!!

It is about half the price that I just paid for a good supply! ($1.65 per pound with all costs figured in!)

Assuming it is real Linotype Alloy, I'd buy it all if you can!
