Use to be the 168 at standard 308 velocity, was not super sonic at 1000 yards. Hence not great round for LR. 175 was able to be supersonic at the longer ranges...with normal pressures and barrel lengths

Great for 600 yards and shorter. Something about ballistic's

Sorry, I had to add information you probably don't need.

Hey Geoff. Still trying to process some of that .308 LC I bought from you. :)
Thanks again.
Looking to make up some nice long range loads for this summer when we go over to the desert part of our state !

Just for info...I loaded some in Federal match brass, CCI benchrest primers, 43.5 gn IMR 4320, seated 1/16" off the lands. It will put 3 shots under a dime at 100 yds.

Depending on how long you want to go (over 600 yards) I would leave the 168's at home and load either 175's or 200/208's, I have a lot of faith in the Hornady 208gr A-max and run in my 300wsm at about 2875fps. I think you can get around 2500fps with the 208gr and a 308.

I shoot the 208's at extreme distances and have been impressed with

The 168's out of a .308 were found to be dropping thru transonic right around 900-950. Out of an '06, they're fine for 1000. As stated, the 175 SMK out of a .308 is still supersonic at 1000 (but not by much, so watch your loads.....)

I'm very new to long range shooting. Still very green. I'm sure shots will all be taken at 600 or less to start.

for the 1000, try the sierra 155 palma #2156 , same bc as the 175, faster velocity to retain supersonic.

Run the 168 at match speeds. The old standard was around 2550 or so...
Use to be 41-42 grains of 4895 was the standard load....
It was always interesting to watch people shoot different loads and high speed loads, and etc., when some real basic and consistent loads work the best. And this was when the M-14 was the gun for Across the Course.
If you only have 168 and LC brass - work some loads up - and probably good up to 800+ for super sonic and decent accuracy.

And for long range - rifle setup will be just as important.....20 MOA scope bases, etc.....

Wish I could go with you east to shoot LR....

The 175 MKs are the superior bullet all around. Out of a 22" barreled .308W/7.62 pushed at 2550 - 2600 fps they will stay sonic to 1100 - 1200 yards depending on the twist (a 12" twist will generally give them a higher BC than the faster 10" twist). Out of a 26" match bolt gun with a 12" twist pushed at 2680 - 2700 fps (easily and safely done within SAAMI MAP) they will stay sonic to 1300 - 1400 yards (longer at higher altitudes).

The 168 MKs will do fine out of a .308W or '06 or other .30 cals for that matter to 900 - 1200 yards depending on muzzle velocity and twist also.
