Hi all,

Newbie to the site. I have an old IDEAL bullet mold in .224 It cast a 50 grain bullet similar in shape to a Hornady V-Max but uses a gas check.

I am using clip on wheel weights as an alloy source. If need be , I can heat treat to a BHN of about 30.

I have a NEF VARMINT bull barrel in .223 that I would like to use this bullet in.

Any suggested loads would be helpful. I may shoot this bullet without a gas check to get a "Boat Tail" effect.

Whats your opinion, and suggestion?

Thanks.

A friend at the range likes 12 grains 4198. Says it is accurate and fun to shoot. dd

Judging from our description you probably have a 225450. I have never been able to get this boolit to shoot accurately out of any of my 22 CF's (1"@100). The best I've gotten out of it in the 223 was with 7.5 Unique under it.

I know that the TC is a different animal than the NEF but I get very good accuracy with 8 grs. Unique from the TC super 14. My boolit is the 225415 at 52 grs.

Some good stuff at Paco's leverguns for .223 and cast bullets. ;)

Mine likes 6.0gr. AA#2 and the 50gr. Ranch Dog boolit. Good for 2100 fps.

I doubt you'll have much success above rimfire velocities without the gas check.

I get low .3's and high 2's with my T/C and the 225415 boolit. What he described was the 225450.
