Took the Garand down to the range at lunch today (also yesterday). I had a few rounds to finish up, I have not had a chance to run any of these loads over my chronograph but will after I settle on a load.

Load data as follows (Data safe in MY gun. Use at your own risk) water dropped NOE 311299 cast from Wheel Weights. Gas checked and sized to .311" and lubed with Carnauba Red. 33grs of GI-Brass Surplus 4895 topped with 1gr of poly filling. OAL = 3.295". I doubt if I took over 3 minutes to shoot these 16 rounds, however unlike yesterday today I did remember to bring and wear my reading glasses. I have to say that it is nice to see a clear and crisp front sight. Before shooting and remembering yesterdays targets I cranked in 1 "Click" of Left windage. I probably should have gone for 2.

The worst target had four shots into 1 1/4" High by 1 1/8" Wide. A composite target of all 16 rounds has them in 1 3/4" X 1 3/4".
Photos of the targets can be found at http://shadowsfall.org/mandogandgun/?p=5904

I'm actually hoping to use this or a related load in my clubs local "High Power" matches. I don't expect to win, just have fun and learn.

Looks like you got the same results with dang near the same load as I use...

Nice.

Tried to pickup some more 4895 last month. Well with all the pressure I couldn’t find any. Picked up some AA 4064. Its’ slower than IMR 4064 being closer to H-Varget. I was expecting the long grain of IMR 4064 I’ve had in the past. Pleasantly surprised to find a short grain powder. It looks much like Varget. Should meter just fine. Without needing to use the trickle and scale. Accurate even has 30-06 cast boolit load data for it. Now to burn some in my bolt gun.

What load (if I may ask) have you ended up with? I'm pretty happy with both 33 and 34gr loads but I'll still probably give 34.5 and 35grs a try and see how they do.

On the other hand I looked around and I'll be needing to cast some more of those bullets real soon.

I ended up using 32 grains 4895 ( I dont use poly filling in my loads) - accurate in my Garand, and powerfull enough to reliably cycle the action without going overboard and wasting gunpowder. I figured that if it will reliably knock down the 200 yard rams in our military silhouette match, it was good enough - so why waste valuable powder getting it hotter...

the 4895 you refer to is it imr4895 or H4895? thanks Pat
