It can shoot as far as the max range of the cartridge...

I am assuming you meant BDL. They are solid firearms that will shoot as far as you can accurately shoot them. If the price is right I rarely turn one down if it is in a caliber I want. Next on the list is a Remington 700 Classic in 308 Winchester.

What caliber are you looking at and what distances are you hoping/expecting to shoot to?

What caliber? Standard barrel break in will suffice, but I rarely do that and my rifles shoot fine anyway.

That rifle should do very well for you. Once again I am assuming here, but is it a 1 in 12 twist? Are you planning on using it for hunting, target shooting, or both? Will you be shooting only cast or jacketed?

You have a rifle that last a life time there, great calibre as well. The fact that it was your Dad's gun also adds to it's value to you. Good luck with it and keep us posted.
