February 2013 Photo topic:
Boolit Lube !
"we all gotta use it, post photos of making it or applying it or cleaning it up"

Well no one has told me to discontinue the "Castpic of the month" ...yet
so I will gladly continue.

Also, the comments thread is barely used. So, I will not create a comments thread, so go ahead and continue to comment in this Submission thread. Since no one is judging, there isn't any real need to be orderly.

Have fun,
Jon

Yes i have been experimenting with different types of cutters. That one is made from a 22-250 case with the base cut off and stuck in a slightly smaller dia. hole in a wine bottle cork, the imitation type cork. The boolits are cut out with a slight flare on the case mouth then they fit up through the case and out the top. Works pretty well. Joe

Jake's Purple Ceresin on a cylinder's worth of 180 gr 10mm RNFP units fresh from the pot, just 20 min ago.

These should be easing their way downrange at about 1,250 fps or so, early next week. This lube is the only thing I use for everything now--I have to run the sizer at about 120-122F, but that's why I like this stuff so much (besides the fact it works)--it doesn't come off on your fingers whatsoever. Sweet.

Bongo,

Welcome to Cast Boolits! Since we're not being orderly, +1 for Jake's Purple Ceresin. It is a great lube for hot climates and it looks v.cool after being applied to loob grooves.

My February Submissions

These pictures were taken with safety in mind, this was an intentional setup, and the explosion picture was flat out luck of the draw. It just happened to explode as I was trying to get the camera to work, and presto, made for a neat picture.

There was plenty of sand, and two abc fire extinguishers within arm's length, just in case. Luckily, everything worked almost exactly as predicted.

This is why you should never heat lube with a propane burner...

Also, for the believers, this is a lube mix and the open flame wasn't quite touching the pan, it took about 4 minutes to explode.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k96/possom75110/Reloading%20Adventures/100_0855.jpg

This one was without the flash, to try and show the height of the flame, it didn't turn out as well as I would have liked.

The picture was taken under a controlled environment, I intentionally set this up for the pictures. I may do it again in video form, just for information purposes.

Is this a proprietory lube of yours ?
or can you share some details... it looks kinda blue-green.
if I were to guess, It looks like a Bullplate/JPW blend.

Absolutely nothing special, but you only cast your first batch of boolits once.

.44 caliber 210 gr. RNFP's from a Lee mold.

On edit: Dang it....I was so excited to have bullets finally I forgot we switched to lube this month. Oh well, look at my boolits anyway!!!

Good lube works... 45/45/10 only on NOE/ Ranch Dog 165s.
I already posted this in the hunt section, but I figured I'd put in the photo booth as well.
I'd title it "A Sunday afternoon stroll"

that's OK ultramag...those look real good.

I had to re-melt my first boolits out of humiliation :)

Last week, thanks to obssd1958, this is the third #1 that I've owned.
I really prefer these for tiny rifle boolits.

I installed a recently "traded for" RCBS .225 die, the bottom was a tiny bit loose, so one wrap of beagling tape, and it's sealed nicely.

All that's left is to fill it with lube and start sizing.

Jon B... we've all melted disgusting slugs/bullets we'd never own up to casting.
My own come from 200 or so which lie a bit flat on one side due to some DUFUS letting an oven get few degrees too hot in a heat treating cycle.....AAAUUUGH!!!!!
At least we can laugh at ourselves....and start over.

JonB, that looks like a real sensible mounting plate that you have on your bench there. Is that something that you did yourself? Or did you buy that somewhere?

JonB_in_Glencoe
02-11-2013, 10:24 AM
I made it with a piece of scrap 3/8" steel plate. drilled and tapped for all the different lubesizers I have (except the #1)...I mount that, as shown, on a peice of oak scrap 5/8"x3 with a strip of copper sheet on top, to convey the heat.

These freshly cast 500 grain .458 cal bullets.
http://s19.postimage.org/bas740n8j/IMG_0578.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

They get a bath in here. 1lb of beeswax, 1/2lb of lard, 1/2lb of canola oil and a tablespoon full of pure lanolin.
http://s19.postimage.org/wqtihyco3/IMG_0576.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Then they get loaded in these 45/70 cases. Over Swiss 1 1/2fg with three wads.

AHA!!!! TIGRR!!!
Yours is the only other coin finish Sharps I've seen although I'm sure there are others around.
I have long Leatherwood scope on mine, and sadly have never fired it... in two years!!!!
I have Ruger #1s, Browning 1885, and other Pedersolis... The Pedersolis shoot with the best of 'em, and quite frankly are more fun.
If yours is the RCBS mold i have that too...and have cast a few but never used 'em..
I have a hard time going beyond 400-445 on Rugers and Marlins... they hurt bad enough.

I do like the easy clean up on the coin finish. I hope that I get it to shoot my cast bullets as good as it looks!! Not there yet. The shooting events up here require tang sights only. I am having some issues with seeing the sights on the 1000 yard buffalo. Put glasses on to see the sights but cannot see the buffalo. Take glasses off and see the buffalo but not the sights. Hmmm
