Is there any interest in Herter's shotshell wads? 12 ga and 20 ga

This is from "shotgunworld.com"

The last Herter's plastic shaped charge wads including "Chalice" and "Vandalee" were packed in a box post marked Sept. 1974.

the data sheet shows the following for 1 1/8 oz loads ;

WW cases (AA) 17.5 - 18.5 Red Dot 8000 - 10,000 LUP

Federal Paper 19.0 - 20.0 700X 8500-9000 LUP
Federal Paper 19.0 - 20.0 Red Dot 8500 -9000 LUP

Peters RXP 17.5 - 18.0 700X 8600 - 9000 LUP
Peters RXP 17.5 - 18.5 Red Dot 8500 - 9500 LUP

This is also from the same thread.

Here is some information on the eight types of Vandalee and Grand Prix wads as given on an info sheet that came in a box of wads. Measurements are in inches. I hope the forum font and formatting do not mess up the table too much.

Dimension A: Length from base of wad to exterior bottom of shotcup
Dimension B: From exterior bottom of shotcup to open end of shotcup
Dimension C: Total length of wad ( A + B = C)

- - - Herter's Label - - - - A - - - - B - - - - - C
-------------------------------------------------------
- - - 5/8 x 1-1/8 oz - - 0.475 - - 0.990 - - 1.465
- - - 7/8 x 1-1/8 oz - - 0.590 - - 0.990 - - 1.580
- 15/16 x 1-1/8 oz - - 0.715 - - 0.865 - - 1.580
- - - - 1 x 1-1/8 oz - - 0.720 - - 0.980 - - 1.700

- - - 5/8 x 1-1/4 oz - - 0.445 - - 1.100 - - 1.545
- - - 3/4 x 1-1/4 oz - - 0.555 - - 1.090 - - 1.645

- - - 1/2 x 1-1/2 oz - - 0.265 - - 1.320 - - 1.585

- - - 1/2 x 1-7/8 oz - - 0.300 - - 1.525 - - 1.825

I'd guess that that fractional inch measurement part of the descriptive label indicates the approximate distance between the base of the wad and the interior bottom of the shotcup.

The various base wad lengths were presumably needed to match the wad to the various brands and lengths of hulls.

I'd be interested, but it's hard to make an offer not knowing what all there is.

I'd forget about them even if they were free. That being said they are very good wads. Much heavier than anything you can buy today. Do they shoot any better than what you can buy today. Probably not. I have several thousand of them I bought years ago at an auction. I use them for crow hunting. Not because they throw a better pattern but because I also got several thousand Remington SP hulls with them and don't mind if I loose some. The load data listed above is about all you find. I have the complete article the above was copied from plus the recipes the guy I bought them from was using. You will notice the load data shows using the same wad for straight and tapered wall hulls. Back then if it would fit down the hull and the stack height was pretty good with 19 grains of Red Dot under it you were good to go. If you know what wad you are looking at I can see if I have any data on that particular combination. I learned more about shotgun loading using this old stuff than I ever would have other wise. It seems these wads were designed for straight walled hulls. back then the only tapered wall hull was the winchester CF and they do work in them but may bulge your hull wall a little. Mainly you will be concerned with stack height. If the wad-powder combination will fit the hull it seems that is all they were worried about. If it was a little short they used a filler. Remember these were some of the first one piece wads available. People were used to loading with individual components during that time so tinkering a little with the load was considered ok. Today we are told to never deviate from the recipe. If I can be of help drop me a PM.

Good Luck....Floyd

Another thing to consider is their age. I have seen plastic wads a lot newer than the newest Herter's wads that had gotten stiff and un-useable. Depends upon how they've been stored over the years.

Sorrt for the delay in responding.

I just checked with the Post Office today. The cost of shipping would be prohibitive for these boxes of wads. Over $20.00 to middle of country and $30.00 to west coast. That is for each box.

Thanks for your interest.

I have an old Herter's reloading manual "Professional Loading of Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun Cartridges" with limited reloading data for the "Herter's Shaped Charge Plastic Wad" if that is the one you have.
