My freind just picked up a DPMS AR-15 in .223/NATO. It has a 16" barrel, and a 1:9 twist. What would the correct jacketed bullet weight be for this rifle?

55gr should shoot fine but not sure how much heavier you could go.

Im going for accuracy. As far as I know, there is an optimum bullet weight for a given barrel length, and twist.

My understanding is you can increase weight up to about 70 or so grains.I use 55 grains in a 1-9 twist.A 100 yd zero, and 69 grain bullets shoot about 3" high, but still group well.

I have shot 55-69 in mine so far with good targets.

I have some heavier but have not had the time to play with them yet.

50-75 gr should be fine in his rifle. Remember each will have a prefered load. The 1:9 may not stabalize the heavier 77grainers. Cheapest ammo to find used to be the 55gr FMJ and 62 gr FMJs and these were the most common.

As mentioned it is a range. Note that LENGTH, not weight is the controlling
variable - so a long skinny VLD nosed 60 gr may not work when a short nosed
77 gr may work. Only testing will prove anything.

+1 on the 50 - 75 gr bullets in the 9" twist. However, with some 70 - 75 gr j bullets the velocity may not quite be high enough out of the 16" barrel. Shouldn't have any problems with 50 - 69 gr j bullets though.
