View Full Version : Using solder with selenium for adding tin?

Hello all,
I have some lead-free solder which has copper and selenium. I've used solder with copper before, but not with selenium. Is there any detrimental effect to using the solder with selenium for adding tin to my alloy?
Thanks,
Rick

Not until YOU say so, Rick! Should not have any affect on your existing alloy. ... felix

Thanks Felix,
I was thinking the small content of selenium when just adding about 2% of the solder to my alloy would probably be insignificant but wanted someone to confirm for me.
Thanks again,
Rick

Selenium is very similar to silver both chemically and in crystal habit -- it should just act like a hardening additive in a lead alloy, and since your solder probably has very little, and you won't need to add much solder anyway, I'd ignore the selenium unless the alloy you make with this solder acts odd.
