I'm thinking of scoping one of the SKS carbines. Don't want to drill and tap any milsurp, so it would have to be either a receiver cover or rear sight replacement mount (do they make those for the SKS?).

Anyone have a recommendation for a mount that they've had good results with?

TIA

Ed-

I've read more than one place that the mounts that attach to the covers don't hold zero very well.

My SKS has the aftermarket receiver sights. http://www.tech-sights.com/ They are really nice.

I've read the same thing, and have a Tech sight. But curiosity, and eyesight, causes me to wonder if a cover which looked really stout (not sheet metal) and multiple screws to tighten just might work. I'm tempted to spring for a few bucks to try, there are some folks who claim their mounts work well. Might be good for mild boolit loads, or not. I know I'll use the tech sight, but...

My Dad bought several different types of scope mounts for the SKS trying to find one that worked. I usually ended up trying to get them to hold a zero, a waste of time. All of them shot loose or if removed for cleaning due to corrosive ammo would not return anywhere close. He finally found a Norinco with a factory side mount that worked well enough to be usefull. The rifle was never very accurate but at least he could see what he was shooting at.

Everyone says side mount is way to go if you want conventional scope

The two best options are to either use a scout mount that replaces the rear sight leaf or a drill and tap mount on the side of the receiver.
Both are solid mounts if done correctly. Your choice of scope or red dot sight is a personal one, but be aware that because of the way the slots are arranged on the Choate drill and tap mount that only red dot sight like the Bushnell or Tasco trophy that use the rings will work on it without machine work.
The bigger red dot sights which have the long base mount will not let you align the base screw properly to lock it down to the weaver rail, but you can use either type on the scout mount.
Also take into consideration that using a conventional scope longer than about 7 or 8 " will not allow you to use stripper clips to load the rifle.
There are other types of drill and tap mounts you can use on the SKS, here's a link I saved

I was thinking about scout scope/red dot myself but have not done so 'cuz my old eyes still work with the stock Yugo SKS sights.

I do not recommend the receiver cover scope mount, from my experience it would not indeed hold a zero.

Y'all have convinced me. I'll stick with the Tech Sight receiver sight. Thanks to all who contributed.
