I'm about to try the RCBS 95 Grain spire point in my 6x45 (Remington 722 w/Pacnor 1 in 12, 3 groove) and am looking for any and all load suggestions.

Is the twist in that barrel not a little too slow for that long bullet, esp. at the lower speeds of that cart.??

Herb:

Try this link for loads for 6x45 cartridge. MT Chambers does have a point about the long bullet in a 1 in 12 twist. You may find that a lighter shorter bullet for better accuracy.

Herb, I think the diameter that needs filled in a barrel with an odd number of lands and grooves is bigger than the bore size one measures with pins. For example, my Obermeyer measured with proper fitting drill bit was .233". Had an Eagan bullet with a .235 boreriding nose, which should have been perfect, but didn't do all that well. I'm working with this NOE bullet now: http://noebulletmolds.com/orders/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=25&products_id=186 to see if my idea of a more bore fitting bullet would help. Way I see it, the space that a boreriding nose ought to fill is groove diameter minus the height of one land, for my barrel, .243-.002=.241.. Got three strings of test rounds down the range and the results look promising. If that RCBS won't stabilize the shorter NOE probably will.

IMHO a 1:12” twist would have a good chance at stabilizing the RCBS 95 grain boolit. I shot a Ruger VT with 12 twist until the barrel was shot out. It would stabilize the 85 gr Sierra SBT-HP but not the longer ogive Hornady 87gr V-Max. The RCBS 95gr does not work in the 1:14” twist 6mm’s found on the PPC’s.

Here's my first try at 50 yards using 4198.....5 shots in .520" center to center, 4 shots in .258" center to center.66851

Slow powders, on the order of 4350 worked very good for me in my 6x45. But, I had a semi-auto to cycle, you've no such problem. The charge of 4198 you show wouldn't have cycled the AR, but I had a gas shutoff valve to turn it into a straight pull if I wanted to use faster powders and sometimes did so. You should be getting around 2300fps, maybe a tad faster. Looks like you're off to a good start.

The experiment continues, in an attempt to get the base of the gas check closer to the junction of the case neck and shoulder (it was previously into the shoulder area) a shooting buddy and lathe tinkerer extrodinare suggested making a sizing die to reduce the front driving band so the slug would be able to be seated out further. He took a piece of all thread and some bar stock and used a tapered reamer so the die would give various degrees of reduction. By reducing the front driving band to .2405" I was able to seat the slug out an additional .060". I loaded 15 rounds and went to the range..........12 rounds went into a group 1.05" high by 1.264" wide in some breezy conditions @ 100 yards. I need to do some further load development.

He made you a nose die. The CB BR guys have been doing that for a long time to get the perfect fit.
