View Full Version : Cast some odd ones today

Well, odd for me anyway. I honestly have way more trouble with bigger boolits than I do little ones. Anyway, I have been casting some Lee 58 target minies to shoot in 20 gauge slugs. I know that I didn't really cast these for a muzzleloader, but since they are minies I figured you guys might like to see them. I bought three molds from Dixie Gun Works for $20 some time ago thinking I would eventually do something with them. I kinda forgot about the 2 on the right. I had cast some from the one on the left, but not many. These are challenger molds and not great ones. They will need some work to run smoothly. Today while I was casting some unused molds, I figured I would cast some up to try as slugs. I think the 345 grain one on the left will do good. The middle weighs about 520 and the right one weighs about 635. I dunno if they will fit in the wad for slugs. They seem kinda fat, what diameter do you .58 guys usually have your minies at? The rt one is about .587-.588 the other 2 are .590-.591. Too big for any 58's?

The other boolits in the second pic come from the mold in the last pic. I think it was sold by Navy Arms? Supposed to be for a .36 revolver. Has kind of a rebated base that measures .376 and a band that when completely filled out goes about .390. The nose is slightly fatter than the base, but smaller than the band. They weigh right at 100 grains. I have seen one other in .44, but despite searching, I have never found one to buy. I currently don't have a .36 either, hopefully to be remedied on my birthday this year. Anyone ever shot anything like this? Anyone have a Pietta Remington in .36 and would like to try some? That's the revolver I will be getting for my birthday and I wonder if these will work very well in it. If anyone knows where to find one in .44, I'd sure like to have one.

Load those "ball-lets" upside down, and you can shoot wadcutters from that Pietta when you get it... :Fire:

I got 3 of the challengar molds when Dixie had them on sale. I got the .591 sizes to try in my Snider. One of them is a wadcutter style that I am going to try in 20ga.

My .58 Minies are .575 and weigh in at 505 grains +/- out of a Lyman mold.

+1 on the wadcutters. I bought my 36 mould years ago off a close out table. $15.00? I think. They are great for 1851 navy. not so much for 1862 pocket navy. no room to get it under the rammer. I got their attention at the 2 day shoot once. They thought I was cheating with the very clean holes.
Less velocity but a much harder punch on critters. Coyotes don't like 'em much. 'yote shooting with BP is fun!!!

I would love the get some 44's for my Starr.
