i have noticed the powder charges suggested are a lot lower for the 147gr boolits can someone explain why they are so much lower

Simple Physics! Energy = (Mass) times (Velocity squared). The more mass (boolet size) the less velocity (powder) it takes to get the same Energy.

I'm not an expert but I would think that the heavier the bullet (projectile) the more pressure required to push it out of the barrel so you have to reduce the gunpowder charge to reduce the pressure caused by the exploding gunpowder to keep internal pressures within tolerance. And of course, the heavier the bullet (projectile) makes it larger in size taking up more space inside the brass case and reducing the available space for gunpowder which will also increase internal pressure.

I'm using VV N320 and N340 powders

147 Precision moly fn, 4" conventional rifled barrel Walther P99 3.2 gr WST = 847 fps, 3.6gr = 864fps at 1.110 oal.

147 gr Berry from a 4.25 Nowlin barrel (mine was pretty fast) 1.165 oal 3.7 grs 907 fps

147gr Precision Moly bullet
3.4gr WST
920 fps
14.7 sd
135 pf
Smoke was not bad at all with WST, but I had them a touch hot. sd was not great, but livable.
This was a very cold day last Dec. WST is reverse temp sensitive. I would suspect lower velocity and pf around this time of year.

Your Welcome - be careful when working up heavy bullet loads - the pressures jump rapidly with small increments of charge weight

Yes, buy a $100 chronograph and save yourself a big headache. You will also be able to make your own load data.

For my 147g 9mm I use N330. I also shoot subsonic. This is the best powder I have found. Order it online and buy it in bulk to reduce the cost. It is a very clean powder. I use it for USPSA also.
