45 ACP in a 45 Win Mag

So you can shoot a 38 in a 357 and 44 special in a 44 mag, can you shoot a 45 ACP or 45 super in a 45 Win Mag? I have a 45 ACP mauser I am thinking about converting to 45 Win Mag and I figured I would ask before starting the project.

Don't know the mauser conversion, but the 45 ACP headspaces on the case mouth so the extractor will be the only thing holding against the bolt face with a 45 auto mag chamber. 38 spl, 357 mag, 44 mag and 44 spl all headspace on the rim.

Now, that said -- if you have the magazine space for the .45 Win Mag, you'd need a different barrel, recoil spring, and possibly a nose or base spacer in the magazine (which might require a modified follower) to accommodate the shorter rounds. With a 1911, that's a five minute change over; with a broom handle Mauser it'd be about twice that if you're practiced at stripping the piece.

I have a mauser 98 with a Rhineland 45 ACP kit installed. I have the magazines for both 45 ACP and 45 win mag.

I've shot 45 acp cartridges in my 45 Win Mag barrel on my Tender. Accuracy was lousy and the only thing holding the case against the breech face was the extractor.

Oh, that Mauser. :roll: Someone says "Mauser" and then talks about a pistol cartridge, I think broom handle (the Chinese made those in .45 ACP for a while, and I've heard of at least one conversion from 9 mm Mauser done by widening the receiver -- some careful welding there, I'm sure! -- that ought to be long enough for .45 Win Mag).

I thought about 45 super, but I already have the 45 ACP and 45 Win Mag magazines. I think someone said you can use 45 supers in a standard Wilson mag.
