I went to a pawn shop this weekend and I found a Savage 340 that was good shape it has Lyman48 sight on it but it still has the rear sight on it. They want 250OTD is this a good price?

I think so. I have one I paid $175 for back in 1995 or so with no Lyman sight. It shoots cast very well.

mine come with holes drilled for a scope and a standard ramp rear.
airc i paid more than 250. [bout 100 more]
if i found one with a rear peep and rifling in the barell for 250.00 it would have left with me.
it's not overly picky about cast boolits either,i have used the rcbs 30-150-fngc the 311041,and a noe loverign design.
all have run the gamut from 1600 through 2400 fps and give excellent accuracy.

Good price. I paid 200 OTD for mine a few years back and it came with a broken old Japanese scope on it, but I mounted a period correct Weaver Fixed 4 and it is good to go. Mine is pre 68 too. No #s.

Very good price! I've had mine for 5 or 6 years and paid, if memory serves, around $200 for it with a spare magazine. If you're gonna hang a scope on it, I'd happily swap you an OEM 1" scope mount/rings for that Lyman 48.

Are you sure it's a Lyman 48? I was unaware that Lyman made the 48 configured for the 340 Savage. Decent price by the way. I wouldn't want to spend much more than that for a 340 though. Good utilitarian rifles.

That's about what I spent for mine and it didn't have a peep on it. I like mine, it's not a tack driver, but definitely the equal of most .30-30 lever guns but more versatile and a very handy little deer rifle.

Just curious, other than pointy boolits, what about them is more versatile than a lever gun?

There is the benefit of being able to unload it without working the cartridges through the action. Loading with a full magazine is quicker than shoving the rounds into a tube one at a time too. The ability to use 'pointy' bullets increases about 20-fold the number of useable bullets. Center mounting a scope in line with the bore- applicable only to classic 94's, Savages and Marlins making it a moot point.

I sold mine 3 weeks ago for 175.00 he also charged 15 % above that to sell it. Joe

About 6 months ago, I bought a 840 late model, with correct scope in very good condition for $230 plus shipping from Gun Broker. The things are as ugly, but they shoot cast well if sized to .310 or .311. It has become a handy truck gun.

Problem is finding the scope mount that fits those holes. It's no thing of beauty either, and I looked for months and months to find one for my .222.

I've seen lots of scope mounts for them before I found my receiver sight. Although I never did buy the scope mount, so don't know how well they fit.

I've never felt an urge to scope a 30/30 and I am not sure I'd buy one of these in 222.

I paid $100.00 out the door for mine about two years ago. The bluing was removed and missing the rear sight. The bore was in good shape so I went ahead and bought it for a project. I refinised the stock and cold blued the rifle and added a williams peep sight to it. I tried loading pointy bullets in it but for some reason it will not cycle them from the magazine. So I have just been shooting the 170gr Speer bullet over a max charge of Leverevolution. Fun little carbine and would be good to leave in the truck if I did such a thing.

not a bad price, not the greatest,,,,I just found one in a gunshop on the Oregon coast for $150.00 it was all there except the magazine, and it was not drilled and tapped for a scope, I passed it by but I can tell you that the 340 (30-30) I have is a very good shooter with cast, and it is light and easy to carry in the field.

go for it !

The best shot I ever made with my old 340 was on a fox running broadside to me at around 50 yds. First shot hit about two feet behind him, which served to put him into overdrive. For the second shot I swung through and slapped the trigger- just like a passing bird shot done with a shotgun. The bullet caught him right in the eye. I was dumbfounded, and proved that even a blind hog finds an acorn now and again!

only an american can understand the appeal of the 30-30 and sometimes it just feels good carrying a bolt 30-30 in the woods. Sure would like to feel a ruger #1 in 30-30!
