I've had a 6.5" and an 8 3/8" from early production runs; never had much luck with the shorter one, and will admit it could have been a mechanical (throats?) problem or sloppy reloading by me. The longer gun was astonishingly accurate. That one was stolen and replaced with a 625-6, a Performance Center model that is extremely accurate and a stainless Mountain Gun that also shot well. Maybe some pin gauges to check cylinder throats? You might find some info on throat dimensions and "eras" of production over on the S&W forum. I don't regret any of mine.

All of the 25-7s and 25-9s are supposed to be dimensionally correct. Only some of the 25-5s are. I wouldn't buy a 25-5 without having at least some try bullets of different diameters to drop in the chambers and see if they go through, indicating the size of the chamber throats.

I have a 25-2, 6 inch nickel. The groove is .4545 and the chamber throats are .454=+ a hair. It does very well with .454 bullets. Sadly, I mostly cast .452s but they work well enough without leading if cast soft. 4 to 5 inches at 30 yards is about as well as I can see with any of my hand guns save my 1911s. They seem to fix my optics and let me shoot better.

I had a 25-5 that was basically ok, but not very accurate. It gave 3 inch groups at 25 yards from the bench, but at that time I had a Colt python and a S&W M-14 either of which would easily out shoot it, they stayed, the 45 went down the highway.
