I have a cast bullet load that I have shot and it shot well but I am not sure where I got the data as I didn't write it down and can't seam to find the info. I was double checking my data before I started to load some more.

I am loading cast ww bullets from a Lee tumble lube .401 175gr TC mold that is throwing 180 grain bullets. My load is 5.2 grains of Unique with a COL of 1.125.

How does this load look. My old lyman cast book doesn't list .40 but I know I got this load from somewhere last spring. It sucks getting old. Closest I could find on the net was for 175 grain cast with 4.8 to 5.8 grains of Unique but I ran across some load data for the 180 grain bullet that says 5.2 grains of Unique is max.

I haven't used that recipe, but the Alliant load data on the web shows a 180 gr. Speer jacketed max load of 6.7 grs. of Unique.

You're not going to have over pressure problems with 5.2 grs. Cast boolits generally produce lower pressure than jacketed when they are the same weight.

I use the Lee 401-175-TC (standard lube). It drops at 180 gr. Lyman 4th Ed. lists the Lyman 175 gr. #401638 with an OAL of 1.100. The Lyman boolit has an OAL of .570 while the Lee is .592 long. I load the Lee to a COAL of 1.110 and use the Lyman data for #401638. If you can load to a COAL 1.125 there should be no problem.

I like 5.0 gr Unique but I like 4.0 gr Promo better.

Lyman 4th Ed shows:
Lyman #401638 (175 gr.)
OAL 1.100
UNIQUE start: 4.7 gr. @ 898 and max: 5.8 gr. @ 971

Thanks Ed

Guess I need to get the lyman 4th edition as my old Lyman cast book doesn't have anything for the .40. I do load with a COAL of 1.125 which puts the case mouth just right on the bullet.

I generally load 165 grain jacket bullets at 6.8 grains of Unique and was looking for a lighter load with the cast but I can't hardly tell the differance in recoil between the 5.2 and 6.8 grain load. I did shoot about 200 cast at a training class with no problems.

I would get LY 47 or 48 before you get the LY cast #4. It was such light reading it would not sink in a puddle.
