Hi guys, new here and have read a lot but still have some questions. I called a salvage yard and they said they had some lead and some linotype. How so I tell by simply looking? Will the lino have markings on it?

The scrap yard probably knows which is which, but linotype is much harder than pure or wheel weights; you can pretty readily compare the effort needed to scratch one or the other with a scriber or small screwdriver tip.

you cant scratch lino with your thumbnail , least i cant . it will ring where pure and is easily scratched lead is a dull thud ... test it before you add to your stash ..

Take a piece of each and scratch them against each other, the lead will be scratched by the linotype much easier than the other way around.

Most scrap linotype I have seen is still in the form of "lines of type".
you will recognize immediately as type.
If it has been melted down refer to the above comments.
