Butt stock tang screw, Browning M92

Yesterday, I was looking to fit a tang sight to a friend's Browning M92.

Silly me, thinking that as the rifle was made in Japan, the butt stock tang screw would be a metric thread.

What I found is that it has an EXTREMELY fine thread, much finer than the thread gauges I have. The diameter was around 0.213" and I tried to measure 5 pitches with my verniers, difficult without a magnifier, but I reckon it worked out to be about 56 TPI.

According to my Machinery Handbook, there is such an animal, 12-56 UNS.

Can anyone confirm this for me?

And can anyone suggest where I may be able to get a slightly longer screw?

Please keep in mind that I am in Australia and chances of finding such a screw from a supplier here would be like finding rocking horse poo.

And we do not have any gunsmith suppliers; in fact, we have very few gunsmiths! :???:

And Brownells do not list this, either as a part, or any 12-56 screw.

Marble Arms lists the proper tang screw for the Browning B92 as a M5.5 x .5 x 1.775, Metric. The length, of course, will be for a Marble's tang sight.

Thanks, mate, that's exactly the info I was after! :)

5.5mm is 0.216" and a 0.5 pitch is close enough to 51 TPI, so that must be correct. Trying to see those teeny thread pitches without a magnifier with my old eyes was a struggle, so no wonder I had it wrong.

I will see if Marbles will send me one.

You're welcome, Norbrat! The Marbles screws are sold in a set -- front and rear -- and they are generally available at most retail shooting supply houses here in the states. Marbles number for the set is 995007.

Of course you may have to alter the profile of the screw head to fit the tang site you intend to use.

Midways won't ship overseas, although we do have a Midway Aust here now, who will get stuff from Midway, usually at some much inflated price.

I have found the set at Brownells and have forwarded the details to the owners as they order stuff from Brownells from time to time, so they can add these to their next order.

The tang sight they have is one I bought a few years ago from a US maker on ebay, who now no longer seems to be there. But it looks very much like a copy of the Marbles, is very well made and works well.
