I had Tom over at Accurate Molds redesign the RD 350 for me.
Changed it from a tumble lube design to a normal grease groove design.
He assigned catalog#460 350B to it.
Been using it in both my 45-70's and 45-90's.
I have been utilizing the HODGDON Varget load data for Trapdoors.
50gr Varget, virgin Starline case and a CCI 200 LRP gives me good results.

FWIW Jim,

I just recently checked this out myself. My MIROKU Win. 1886 has an unGodly short throating. I am unable to load the NOE 460-350Gr RF or the Accurate 460 350B moulds for my rifle; the ogive(s) bear on the rifling and the lever won't close without forcing the noses further into the rifling (bad idea).
Damn shame for me too, as I REALLY like these bullets. (I guess I could have a 'smith correct this though)

While checking the Accurate 460 350B bullet; I kept trimming an old case to see what it would take to feed this bullet. I'd need to trim to 2.060" case length to get it to feed reliably (not about to do this).

The moulds I can load without any issues are the RCBS designs; 300Gr FN, 325Gr FN-U & 405Gr FN's and the SAECO #017 350Gr. FN.

The NOE 460-350 RF & Accurate 460 350B, both great bullets I.M.O., feed beautifully through my Marlin though.

I think it's really gonna depend on the throating of your individual rifle.

My 1886 Winchester TD is a rebored .33 Wincherter barrel (1910) in 45-70 . I will receive it later next week. I have the RCBS 300g FNGC. The only mold currently available from NOE is the 460 350Gr. RF (RD) in plain base. Does anyone know if Tom over at Accurate Molds can cut GC in a 2 cavity mold? While the RCBS 300 g may do everything I will need, just curious about the 350 g. The rifle weighs around 7.25 lbs. Not a heavy weight.
Thanks!

Tom will take care of your mold needs and that's for darn sure!!!
I have two 1886 Browning SRC's that have no throat to mention.
Could not get any of my lead boolits to chamber at all.
Sent one of them to Clements Custom and had it throated properly.
The other one will get the same treatment as soon as I get it back from Macon Gun Stocks.
The Remington 405gr "J" word bullet will work with no problem because of the step down design of the nose section.

Howdy, Garcia,

Can you tell me what Clements charged to throat your Browning 1886? Thanks.

Howdy, Garcia,

Can you tell me what Clements charged to throat your Browning 1886? Thanks.

Think it was around $100.
Well worth it in my way of thinking.
Now I can feed it just about anything I want!

I'm about to buy my first boolits for my 1902 1886 Xtra Lightweight. The boolits will be for some informal target shooting just to get re-aquainted with the gun.
These boolits are available from Penn Bullets and range from 300 gr on the left to a 330 gr and [2] 405 gr boolits on the right.

Penn says this about the 300gr:

This is the lightest bullet I make in this caliber and it is designed to feed and function through lever guns and provides low recoil in Thompson Center Contenders and Encores. The flat nose design is suitable for deer sized game and the accuracy is good. It is not suitable for most single shot Sharps type rifles as the rate of twist in those guns is set up for a heavier weight bullet (usually 500 grains). This over stabilizes the bullet and the groups will be non existent. Velocity Rated to 2000 fps. This design is not good for black powder applications as it is a single grease groove design.

Need some inputs please....right now, all I have is Reloder7 powder

Only two diameter boolits and bullets will chamber in my 1886 Extra Lite, no throat at all that I
can tell.

Rem 405 Jbullet is two diam, works great.

Both the Hornady 300 gr HP and the 350 gr RN Jbullets shoot fine in my 1886. I've never tried any cast and was wondering which of the above cast would be best to try first.

Youngest son and I took a trip to the range on Tuesday.
Took my 1886 Browning SRC and my 1886 Winchester reproduction.
The son flat tore up a Folgers coffee container at a little over 100 yards with my aforementioned loads.
We had a great time firing those loads and were not beat up the least.
Did wimp out with the SRC and wore a PAST shield.
That metal butt plate has got to go!!!!!!

Good morning
As the 45-70 has more brass length than we generally need with short boolits you can consider cutting the brass shorter to accomidate the fat nosed boolits for the new 1886 rifles. I have the light weight and the 26" octagon so I have brass segregated to those rifles. But then I also have alot of 45-70 brass from many years of dealing with this caliber.

I shoot several 45-70s in both single shot and lever actions. Most are old original arms.

The RCBS 300 RNFP gas checked bullet works very well in the original Win 86s- it seems to be a perfect match. I cast with a fairly soft alloy, use soft lube and load to about 1200-1300 fps. I lightly crimp into the bullet's crimp groove with either a FCD or the roll crimp shoulder in the seater. That combination has been the most flawless in all my original Win 86s.

BTW, that is also the bullet and recipe I use for a couple of original Win 76s in 45-75
