Hello I recently picked up an H&R single shot 20 gauge shotgun. Its my first 20 gauge and like it so far. Just got one question though, can I buy a rifle chambered barrel say .223 or .243 And install it without modifications or will gunsmithing be required?

Thanks,
Jason

If you have SB1 receiver you cannot go from shotgun to rifle but if you have SB2 you can go from rifle to shotgun.

It needs to go to the factory.

Unless you would like a 357 or 44 Magnum, which they will install.

I would spend time reading the FAQ's at greybeard outdoors. They have a dedicated H&R/NEF forum second to none.

at one time smalll firing-pin sb1 frames came in combo's with a shotgun barrel & a 22hornet, 30-30win. or 357 barrel. but i don't think the factory will fit a rifle barrel of any caliber to them any more. you will most likely hafta buy a used barrel in a low pressure caliber such as those mentioned & fit it yourself. this could be as simple as just snappin' it on yer action. but like as not you'll hafta either put a thin shim in it or do some minor fittin' to the notch on the under-lug. as mentioned above, go to graybeards and do some studyin'. anything ya can't find out about an h&r there either ain't worth knowin' or ain't been thought of yet. luck to ya & have a good'en friend, bubba.

Chances are that you have the "shotgun" receiver if you bought this as a shotgun.
In that instance, you can only ever add a shotgun barrel to the gun.
If you visit the H&R Barrel Accessory program page, you'll see the visual difference between the shotgun receiver and the rifle receiver.

I started off the same way, and quickly realized that my path to happiness was to sell the shotgun version, and get the rifle version.

I now have several barrels for my H&R, all factory fitted (I strongly urge everyone to spend the low $$$ and have the factory fit the barrel), and love it.

He may not be able to buy a barrel from the current company if his gun is an older version. People forget these have been made for 50 or more years.
