Just got a new 650, works great, except the shellplate jerks at the last moment of indexing and jostles powder out of the top of small cases like 9mm. Apparently this is a common problem for the 650. I called Dillon twice, studied several forums, and finally found relief doing this: Cut half a coil off the bottom of the Index Ball Spring (#13997). This is the spring that puts tension under the Index Ball that causes the shellplate to stop at the right spot. This reduces the tension just a bit and it reduced the spillage by about 90% for me. Now a flake or two might come out, but not the mess that it used to make. Hope this helps. I couldn't find any thread on Castboolits about this so i decided to post this in case anyone else had the problem.

When you talk to them at Dillon they should have mentioned that there cure is to cut up to one coil off to end the problem. I cut 1.5 coils of then stretched the coil a little and it was perfect. This is a well known problem and is talked about in numerous places on the net.

Some also put this on the shell plate to smooth the action out. I've tried it. It seems to work.

On the shell plates that I've had an issue with I polished the bottom of the shell plate the same as I do the bottom of a sprue plate, 600 grit/100 grit/Crocus cloth, the tighten the center bolt just a bit more so it is snug but smooth(the polishing of plate is to avoid binding or galling). This has done two things, stopped the smapping into place due to the ball/indent, and keeps the plate from flexing up & down as shells go into & out of the dies.
