Hey Guys,
I was driving the kids down to the bus stop this morning when we spied this guy trying to hide in the grass. We were able to just see his head. I was able to get within 35-40 yds., I could see him curled up trying to hide and shot offhand. The shot went through his lower jaw, out his neck, into his lower shoulder, out his shoulder, into his ribs and then out his rear end. I did not find the boolit. That's a lot of holes for one little bullet
I used my "homemade" Trapper in 30/30 using Lyman's 311008 (WDWW and PBGC) and Unique going about 1750fps.
This guy might be what has been getting my barn kittens

Skin and streach it and you might see $50.00 if the guard hair arent broken. Fur prices are the highest they have been in a long time. I expect about $75.00 this year for for high line coyotes prime and properly put up.

"homemade" Trapper" This sounds suspiciously like a good thread unto itself."

Nice work, sir.

You can't kill a fox with a cast bullet from a 30-30. Everybody knows that. You gotta have a $1 bullet going 4,000 fps from at least a 223 Ubermag. You can't do it with iron sights, either. You gotta have a $3000 4x20x50 scope.

Bullshop,
I have already had it skinned but I can't sell it. Red foxes are not real common around here (we do have Grays and Swifts ) and this is the first one my daughter had seen in the wild. My daughter asked me for it in her "I'm Daddy's little girl voice". What could I say but sure. She wanted to skip school and watch it being skinned. She wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up and like to watch me skin and dress animals to see how they are put together. She just loves hunting and the outdoors.

Hamish,
The gun in it's original form belonged to an "Old time" local lawman and was very beat up and neglected when it was given to me by a mutual friend. The stories of this old gun are more interesting than the conversion into a "homemade" Trapper. But I digress.

KEWL!

I never saw a red fox in all my years there.

Coyotes have displaced (ate) them here it seems.

Saw a nice coyote beside the road over near Murfreesboro this morning.

Easy shot, but many things (other than no gun) precluded collecting him!

Good lord, that's a lot of bullet for a red fox. Nice looking critter! I'm guessing that this is the "clean" side in the photo, eh?

Thomas,
Thanks for the compliment.
The 311008 is only a 120 grain slug and it is not going very fast. At 1750 fps muzzle velocity it is only going about the same speed as a .22 LR out of a rifle. The side shown in the photo is actually the side with all the holes in it. This critter just did not bleed very much. I did not even notice the "extra holes until we skinned him. I use water dropped wheel weights for the alloy to help stop leading. This makes the bullets pretty hard. Other than smashing up the lower jaw all the holes looked like they were .30". In fact I don't think there was any expansion.
Thanks, jmsj

I have similar performance with 170 grainers through pigs.... I don't think these bullets ever stop!
