just bought a RCBS .520 round ball mold...
what would be the ideal patch thickness for my .54 caliber muzzle loader.... I dont like to pound on the ball starter just push them in...

I'd start with an .015" pillow ticking,and as you have indicated there is no good use in having to use a ball starter.

JS.do you mean I could choose a patck that could permit me to start the ball with reasonable force holdind the rod low then afet a few inches (6 to 10) continue holding the rod further up....

Yessiree,I do,that's the way the longhunters did it.The old hunting bags never had short starters with them.
Unless you are target shooting you probably won't see any difference.

thank you Madcaster.... I was afraid there for a while that I made a mistake in buyind this mold.... yes that the way I like just load and shoot for the plasure.....and its going to be perfect for hunting ........ just great.....
