.358 wadcutter sized to fit in a 9mm Glock?

Hey folks, I was just curious if anyone has done this yet?

I have a 358 wadcutter 158 gr mold I thought would be interesting to cast with and then size to fit my glock 19 if it would function?

I remember seeing someone shoot heavy 38 super j words in a 9, maybe Hickok45 on youtube?

So, my questions, separate from the barrel debate are these
- will it fit in the case?
- and will it function safely and reliably if sized to .356 or similar?
- is the weight too much?
- is there any way to know a starting load?
- or am I crazy?

I have now gotten about 6000 pieces of brass, and primers, and hope to load up target ammo that would also function in a pinch as SHTF ammo.

Hey Dan,
Yeah, you can shoot that boolit out of a 9. I've done it in mine with no problems–good feeding, decent accuracy.
No need to size them down, unless you really want to. I keep my 9mm boolits at .358 across the board. There's actually a bit of data on that load...here's most of what I have:

158gr Cast Bullet, RN or SWC
(I load to 1.08" oal)

Sug. Start Vel Max Vel
Powder Gr FPS Grains FPS
Red Dot 3.0 858 3.6* 963
Unique 3.5 883 4.5* 1039
Herco 3.6 840 4.6* 1010
Bullseye 2.5 840 3.0* 1000

*I have not tried max loads, and don't recommend them.
big bullet + small case=high pressure.

Very interesting the OP made reference to wadcutter Im thinking possibly he meant SWC? I have thought about trying some 148gr .358 WC's but from what I read they would not chamber. Can you shed some light on that?

Yeah, I can't see a full wadcutter chambering in 9mm pistol. It would get all smashed into the barrel unless you loaded it way too short for safety.

Yes that was kind of what I was asking too. I was asking about a WC mold I have. Although I could just buy a SWC mold too, then I can use it for both 357 and 9.

Don't even think about using a wadcutter in a 9mm case. The needed seated depth to clear the rifling would be so deep there would be little case capacity left, and the loads listed by Boolseye in post #2 would be quite dangerous with them.

Pick a more suitable bullet. Most 158's of RN or SWC shape seat so deeply in the tiny 9mm case that powder charges must be reduced greatly or problems with overloads will result.

Most blunt SWC's normally intended for revolvers don't feed too well in 9mm pistols. But you can shoot them in your .357 if they don't work in your 9. Be careful.

That 158 gr. boolit is much better suited to the .38 spl or .357 mag. I don't really care for it as a 9mm boolit, though it will function OK. If you do load some in 9 cases, be very careful working up your loads. Start low, since such a big bullet seated deeply could cause dangerous pressures if overloaded.

I made a dummy 9mm today using a 147gr .358 dia wadcutter and by the time is was seated deep enough to even chamber and that was not attempting to do so with other than than barrel in hand, by the time the case was flush with the hood there was literally no place to add any power. It for all practical purposes its a TOTAL bust.

I shoot 147 115 gr SWCFB and RN with no issues but the idea of WC or DEWC ..NOT A CHANCE with any weight near 150 grs. I doubt even such a thing as a 90gr'er would not be safe.

Shoot SWC's or TC's and you can try numerous different weight bullet and powders but trying to come up with a combo 9mm/.357 seems to be tempting fate.

Actually there was a mould marketed for 9mm....a wad cutter. Just don't remember exactly the number, but I had one for a brief moment in time.
