It must be going towards full moon, because a good acquantance has a hawes (that big heavy german single action) 44 mag with a bulge in the barrel. He said he took it to a gunsmith who said shoot lead only in it and it is good to go and now this fellow would consider doing a swap job. I got alot of 44 brass going to waste in containers and all these molds for the 444 and I have been thinking of a 44 sometime again and I got these large pistol primers just sitting in a box, so I really need to have a fair market value of this gun. He said it has very light holster wear, other then the slight bulge it is very nice. All thoughts and input will be considered in this therapy session!

Find out what the cost of a used Hawes is and subtract the cost of a new barrel.

Where exactly is the bulge? Far enough out to cut and recrown behind it?

Chances are it was too short from a stuck bullet.
A strong gun and I think Herter's was the first to bring them in but I have no history other then they were imported at Van Nuys, CA.
A small bulge might not hurt it at all. But price is something of a question. Can't cost much with a bulge. A barrel for $60 is a deal but it needs to be fit.
Buy a Ruger!

I've got one in 357 I bought on gunbroker. It's pretty rough and was missing the front sight. If I remember right I had 226.00 in by the time I got it shipped and transferred. I've only worked up one load due to time restraints. Doesn't shoot too bad but it's not a Ruger.
My plans for it is a truck beater gun. Something it's very suited for.

Depending on how bad the bulge is you might shoot hollow base boolits alright.

My Blue Book says the Hawes Single Actions run from $225-$450
I see one on Gunbroker with bids of $275
I would offer $200
A few years back I bought one in 357 that had a badly worn barrel for $125
I think the EAA Bounty Hunter is a modernized version. I bought a new one in 357 and it is very similar.

Here is a new one in 44 for $350 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=325816677

We have sold two or three of them in the last year at the shop I work at. They were all well worn 44s and I think the highest one sold for 200$ or thereabouts. I wouldn't pay more than 125$ for it personally. Even if you find a barrel and have it properly fit to the gun you'll likely be around the 150-200$ mark for parts and labor making getting your money back out of it near impossible.

ok, thanks that is what I need to know. I thought 150-180 might be in the ball park. I imagine he will think it is worth more with what he considers "the run on guns". I really don't want it but always open to new projects.
