I read in the last issue of Handloader that the 1970 issue of the Lyman #45 loading manual is now a classic and is selling for upwards of $200.00. Has anyone here seen these prices being paid?

Why is it considered a classic?

I have no idea. Article did not elaborate.

This was discussed awhile back in the Off Topic, somebody posted a link to Amazon where they are going for $60 on up to a couple hundred. Not sure why but it makes me glad i fished one out of the trash at my best friends house a few months ago:)

I'm in the process of reading that article at the moment, from what I gleaned the 60-70's versions hold alot of historical cartriges and data that is not available in modern manuals.

Terry Weiland's suggested readling materials for vintage loading:

Complete Guide to Handloading (Philip B. Sharp)
Pet Loads (Ken Waters)
Cartridges of the World (1st ed. Frank C Barnes)
45th ed. Lyman Reloading HB (1970)
Handbook of Cast Bullets (Lyman '58)
Speer Manual #6 (1964)
Propellant Profiles (Wolfe Publishing)
Ideal Hand Book #34 (Lyman '40)
Any Shot You Want (A Square, 1996)
Shooting the British Double Rifle (Graeme Wright)

I recognize a couple, need to look into the rest.

Yup, and how many other curmudgions like us will be poised over the keyboard when it ticks down to the last 15 min? ;-)

In my case not an issue, another member here has a copy for me in his library.

Yep, same here...#44....I think Gear has #45......:coffeecom

Just went and checked...Speer #7..1966.....just can't seem to win....the old Hornady #2 edition didn't even make the list..(and mine still has the dust cover)....funny thing is, I still use these, not often, but on occasion..

The Lyman 45th addition was the first one available when I got started.

Mine is so dog eared and used up especially from those first 10 years of handloading that no one would give much for mine - that is if it were to be sold. I think and hope it will be passed down as a working resource. Years ago when evil-bay got going I found and bought some of the earlier Lyman loading handbooks just to see what was in them. I agree the #45 is one of the better. The great attribute of forums like this is we can and do share information so well. :drinks:

I read the same article today. I still have the one my dad & I got in 1978 and it still has the price tag on it: $6.99. Guess I'd sell for $200 if someone offered, ha ha.

I have the lyman #45 and the speer #6 off of that list.
There is no price on my lyman #45, but on the back of my cast bullet handbook there is an add for it for a whole 4.95. lol
