I just aquired the holy grail of ammo boxes, original 577/450 by Colonial Ammunition Co of NZ we think about 1885 vintage

that is one neat old box , tell us more , how was the lid fastened , it looks rabbited in to the top , do you have any idea of what it is made out of ,,, wood wise m and what doess the last line say ? not liabal to explode in ??????

What does the bottom line say on the side of that box, "Not liable to explode in [what?]."

Looks like "not liable to explode in bulk" to me -- meaning, the whole box won't go off at once even if you somehow set of one or two cartridges inside. Implies non-mercuric primers, I think, but I'm not certain on that last...
