Going to start a new adventure here. It May not be possible but here is what I would like. I want a PB mould design that can work cross platform for SKS, AK, and M1a. Given the availibilty of gas checks I would like to use PB. That is unless somebody wants to sell me a GC maker. I want it to be able to cycle the semi. Am willing to trade some accuracy for cycling. Would love 2-3 MOA. These are just plinking rounds. Any suggestions? I looked at Toms site and he has many PB designs around 200 gr. Could this cycle the action without running into leading bore pressures? I have done a couple of searches and read some sticky's but have not found a solid answer. I know I could use it single shot but what fun is that? Any suggestions here?

I know I haven't bought checks in a while, but I didn't see a shortage of .30 caliber checks. I just looked and Graf's and MidSouth are out of stock, but Midway and Natchez both have them in stock. So what is the availability issue with gas checks?

Can't get them from Natchez I live in GA. Just trying to keep it simple really with the PB. Didn't check midway. Their shipping costs are horrible.

Why not just remove the gas check shank from the Lee mould? They have two for that caliber.

Can't get them from Natchez. Are you saying GA prohibits products coming from TN, or vice versa? I'm lost on the reason you can't get them from Natchez. Midway is getting better about shipping, not using only UPS. But still, they are expensive to ship. Graf's will likely have them back in stock before long.

Blammer sells gator gas checks, it's all I use, he is in Eastern NC. Personally I believe the 312-155 would be about perfect for what you want, but I wouldn't use it in those cartridges at velocities that would cycle without gas checks.

went ahead and ordered a lyman 312 155 2r, a 309 and 311 sizer, and 1000 gas checks. Gonna try 2400 powder. My cousin has 3 AKs and an sks. I have sks, garand, m1a. not to mention our bolt 308 guns. Lot of hungry mouths to feed and tired of paying for j word. I do have a set of corbin dies coming to make rimfire into .224. They should be in this week. Now if I can figure out what to do with my 6.5 x . 284. I will no longer be dependent on what is in stock. I already cast for all my handguns and 7mm rifle. I guess if all i have to buy is sierra 142 SMK and berger 230 for my 1000 yd stuff I will be OK.

If 2400 won't cycle the action try H4895. Twenty-one grains with a 165gr boolit cycles my SKS just fine.

thank you sir. I will in fact try it if 2400 doesn't want to play ball.

Trying to get a single PB'd cast bullet to function and reliably shoot 2-3 moa in an SKS, AK and M1A is going to be a lot of fun and probably fraught with a lot more frustration. Oh, you will get a 160+ gr cast PB cast bullet to function in all 3 ok but the 2-3 moa accuracy? You'll have fun getting tha level of accuracy in the SKS and AK with GC'd bullets or even jacketed for that matter. Much better off getting the GCs or a GC maker along with the Lee C312-155 for the SKS& AK and a heavier 170 - 200 gr bullet for the M1A. However, with the right load combination the C312-155 can be made to shoot well in a M1A, especially if it has a 12" twist barrel (original twist for the M14).

Ditto on this. I used Junior's hog rifle recipe with a gas checked, 172 grain, flat nose pushed by 21-22 grains of 4895. My SKS cycles beautifully, is accurate and no leading issues at all so far. Note: with this setup, the gas check is down below the neck of the 7.62x39 case but presents no problems because it is crimped on securely. A mold with a "sharper" ogive would probably allow the boolit to seat farther up.

I'm guessing that Mr. Doughty's legacy will invariably connected to the words "SKS" and "hog rifle"... and cast bullets, of course. :-)

There is a sticky on cast in the M1a , I dont think 2400 will cycle it try the 4895, works great in mine.

I've been shooting the Lee 160 gr. GC TL Ed Harris bullet in my Chinese and Yugo SKS for several years now. I also shoot the same bullet in my Mosin and 300 Sav. as well. Bullet drops just over 313.5" and I apply the GC with the Lee .314 push through sizer. Bullets get two light coats of Lee Alox/JPW lube.

In the SKS rifle I use mainly Alliant 2400,the Chinese SKS will cycle reliably with just 12.5 grs. MV 1450+ fps. on the chrono with a load of 14.5 grs. MV is 1950+ fps. The Yugo requires the max load of 15.0 grs. of 2400 to cycles but on occasions it will stovepipe a case for 100% reliably cycling in the Yugo or any other SKS rifle that 2400 want cycle I use 18.0 grs. of Reloader #7.

Accuracy wise I get excellent results with the cast loads in my SKS rifles. Haven't shot any 10 yd. targets since the state closed down the public range but I've shot plenty of 50 yd. ones and a occasional 75 yd. target.

Yugo 50 yd. test target I shot about a month ago,my Chinese shoot basically the same groups.

The flyer outside each group is the first hand chambered rd. SKS rifles seem to do this no matter the ammo type used,at least mine do.

I have used the 155gr 312 2R from Lee with good results in my SKS and AKs. Can't recall the load off the top of my head but with 2400 powder it functions very well. I have used it both checked and checkless with good results.

Smoke a plenty, though!

My SKS tends to wear the brass pretty hard so I don't like to use expensive boxer primed 7.62 in it, though. (Yugo)
