View Full Version : 41 mag - what's you're favorite middlin' load?

I need to load up a few .41's to test out a revolver. I don't want a barn-burner, smokin' load that'll impress everyone down the line at the range, just want a good, all-around load using a fast powder.

I'm going to use a 215 SWC-BB, Starline brass and WLP's, and either Unique or 231... not a real MAG load, but more a middlin' load similar to the 10gr. load of Unique in a 44mag, or the 9gr. Unique load in a 45 Colt.

What's your favorite middlin' load in the .41?

Thanks a lot!

Tristan.

(Don't worry, I'll cross-reference load books, powder co's. websites and etc. and work up if it's anywhere in the vicinity of a top-end load for the powder...)

7.0 to 8.0 grains of Unique should go 825-950 FPS. Those results are from a 6.5" Blackhawk with 212 grain SWC's (Lyman #410032).

Never used 231--but 7 gr of Unique will do what you want

I've shot 7.5 gr Unique with various 215 gr commercial cast, it's usually the load I use with these. It runs 995 out of a S&W 4" barrel and 1060 fps out of a Ruger 7 1/2" barrel. Pleasant to shoot and about as accurate as those bullets will shoot. Duplicates the "police" .41 load.

8.0/Unique or 6.0/231 are both excellent loads.

I use 8.0 of unique with a 220 gr Keith bullet for my plinkin loads, easy on me, easy on the gun, accurate.

7.8 grains unique with rem 2 1/2 primers under my saeco 220 boolits are shooting 1 inch groups at 50 yards out of my scoped 41 bisley hunter.

Ive shot a ton of 8.5 grains of unique and a 230 cast. pleasant to shoot and still more then capable of killing in the field.

Well, now, seems like unique is leading in the 'favorites' category...

I got in a hurry the other day, and as 231 was in the hopper, loaded up a few with a load out of the Winchester load guide. After all that effort, range day was cut out due to the range being closed! Arrgh.

But, I'll take the extra time to put together some of the loads using Unique, and when I get to the range, check them both out.

Thanks a lot for all your expertise.

couple other powders you might want to try in loads like that are herco and power pistol. Power pistol has been real good to me for accuarcy. It will never replace unique totally but i use alot of it anymore. It can for the most part be loaded with unique data. It burns much cleaner the unique if that matters to you as its doesnt to me. Meters really well (better then unique) and had given me great accuracy in mid range loads in everything from the 32s to the 500s and is probably the best powder out there for top end auto loader rounds.

Not quite what you asked for but when you run through some of the powders you have now you should try Trailboss. IMR now has data for the 41 mag (I like to think I get credit for this with my begging them last year)

It throws chrges more consistent than any powder I have ever seen. It makes dandy low power loads that I have found to be very accurate. And it fills the case preventing double charges. What more could a guy want?:Fire:

In addition to the Unique loads mentioned, AA#7 starter loads have been accurate in the 657 and 57 I have used them in.

I have shot alot of 8-10 graind of Unique behind a 220 SWC. Tried some SR4756 last year (Ken Waters Pet Powder for Cast) and was suprised at how well it grouped.

Since were talking about other powders Lloyd is right Herco does well with cast bullets- and it can give low end and some strong higher loads--800x also does well across the board as to loads
