I'm still a dinosaur with computers. I don't use chat, so am I still in danger? What happens to program operation when you disable Java? GW

I think, as long as you have it on your comp, you can be vulnerable to attacks, viruses.

How do we know when this attack is fixed? And how do I disable java without deleting it?

You cant disable you have to delete it.

I tried to delete and couldn't, so don't know if my computer is infected or not.

Firefox took the liberty of disabling Java for me. I see there's a fix out now, so I'll update it when I get home.

You have to go to a site that has been attacked and is hosting the code. For example you don't have to worry about ". . . scurvy, the dysentery, spotted fever or the cholera not to mention other maladies contracted in consort with low women", if you don't associate with "low women". Coming here is probably safe, going to some site that a stranger sent you a link to because they are selling lead for a penny a pound . . . not such a good idea. :)

There are vulnerabiliteis and what we call zero days out there all the time. Just be careful of where you go and what you do.

There is a new version of Java out version 7 build 11 that should be unaffected. You can download it at www.java.com

Do I understand right that the threat is for Java 7 & newer? I'm finding Jave 6 on my machines, so I'm safe, right?

Rick, uninstall that version, and load the new one. Yours also has the security flaw.

NO - older software is typically MORE at risk because much of the upgrading of versions
is protecting you from the ever-so-clever villians out there trying to destroy or control your
computer.

Newer software, rewritten to block the known problems, is the solution.

Actually, you can disable. Just google "disable java win xp" or whatever your operating system is, and you'll find plenty of pages. Go to one like Cnet or tech support forum rather than somewhere you've never heard of and you should be good.
edit add: there might be different directions depending on which browser you use.
