MiHec 2 or 4 cavity brass 358640 380 ACP/9mm Luger & Makarov Cramer HP GC or PB

This GB is Closed.....

This is a new design in this weight series. This will be a two or four cavity, Cramer brass HP mold. It will cast at 0.358" or just slightly over for the 380 ACP and 9mm Luger……… and 0.366” for the 9mm Makarov. Gas check and plain base versions will be available for both, but the 9mm Makarov GC version will probably have to use either home made GC or 375 GCs. How the makarov GC works out is really up to the buyer since it is a special size Edit... Gator is offering 9.3 GCs now. The internal base diameter is the same as the 375 which is about 0.004" larger than the GC shank diameter. These may or may not work. that is not offered with no guarantee of fit. Dependent on what MiHec orders for cherries, these molds might be cut with one cherry and bored and orbited for different options, his choice on that.

Edit: For those of you wondering about it's use in the 357 Sig, here are the parameters.
If you seat the GC version to the base of the neck, 0.035" of the front band shows and the cartridge is under the spec length of the cartridge. If you seat the front band to the end of the case, about half of the GC surface is in the case with no lead exposed. Either way it looks to work out.

We will need fifteen to commit to this. We will run this until we get the number we need or until MiHec closes the GB.... and there is no selected date that will happen.

For the two cavity mold, the price is $85 with one set of pins included plus $8 per extra pin set if wanted plus $15 shipping.

For the four cavity mold, the price is $120 with one set of pins included plus $16 per extra pin set if wanted plus $20 shipping.

If the HP pins are not suitable for reversal to a solid, the blank pins come with the price of the mold. If you do not want the HP pin sticking out of the base of the mold, in the case of reversable pins, you can order a set of blank pins for a smooth mold bottom.

Pin options: 1) large HP, 2) penta HP, 3) blank pin for flat nose

Please list your Forum name and your disguised e-mail address in suitable form and the pin options you think you want along with the number of molds.

Can this mold be made without the gas check ?

I've seen a couple of GBs where MiHec used a GC cherry and bored out the shank to PB........ so yes, its possible IF he would do it.

Yes, it probably will be in the shorter lighter blowback designs. There are several very stout 380 / 9mm Kurtz handguns out there that will eat the lighter guns lunch. You will get leading with hot soft boolit loads in some of them if you want the HP to expand well....... thus the GC design.

Finally a design that just might work in the short necked 9x25 Dillon. This beast will launch a 90 gr. J-word at almost 2000 FPS so the gas check will defs be required.

I'm in for a 4 cavity gas check with all the pins.

Thanks.

Since I need to decide on weather I want the large HP pins or the penta HP pins, could someone give me a very brief idea of advantages or disadvantages of both so I can make an informed decision? I bet I should probably know this already, but unfortunately have to admit I dont. And the intent is to use it as a back up gun for defensive use, not paper or hunting anything. Thanks for any and all help.

in a nutshell, Penta might/ should fragment ( with harder lead alloy). Occasionally with less brittle alloy it mushrooms "easier" in sections (like a Barnes or a flower rather than a mushroom...)

Perhaps other smarter people can tell you how this particular bullet will do?

I don't know enough about this bullet nor your gun to say what's "best" for you, but personnally I'd probably try both!

So if I understand you correctly, the penta pin should fragment or expand more readily, while the standard HP should still mushroom, but not as much, and therefore provide slightly less expansion while also giving better penetration? If this is correct, then considering that my guns are a Russian Makarov with the .380 ACP barrel and a Bersa .380, and not one of the super strong .380s or 9x19s or anything capable of higher velocity, and to be frank, me having limited faith in the .380s ability to penetrate to begin with, I would probably be better off with the standard HP over the penta HP. Or do I have my head screwed on backwards with this?

I'd probably be better off with the standard HP over the penta HP. Or do I have my head screwed on backwards with this?

The penta pins outer points are the same nominal diameter as the large HP..... little difference in initiation of expansion, just the manner of expansion is changed. Most of the problem with high performance 380 ammo is lack of expansion. Either of your guns are big enough to do what the cartridges are capable of.

I want to get in on this GB, but have a question. This boolit in 9mm will be a screamer, especially the hollow point version.

I have an order in for a PB Checkmaker, but it hasn't been delivered and I haven't played with it.

The question is will a PB Check made of .006 aluminum (Miller Lite screw top aluminum cans) let me push this boolit with full power 9mm loads, or do I need to just get the GC version.

FLYCUTTER
03-06-2013, 12:29 AM
In my humble opinion I would use gas checks for magnum pistol and rifle bullets. I see you are set on a gas check bullet and I personally would go with a bullet designed for a check, not smashing something .006 oversize and deforming the lead on a light hollow point bullet. I also would use a softer alloy,(under 15 bn.)
so the hp would upset rather than blow apart. Good luck on your choice.

380s are notorious for not expanding jacketed HPs. You have to have a top end load with jacketed to get satisfactory results. With cast.... cast the large HP with 25 or 30:1 lead/tin and push it to top book loads. The GC will help you on that.

I'm with you USSR, seems like it should be "last call" time.

There is no "last call time" on any of the GBs I run. To be viable to have a run, the minimum number is 15 molds, but that doesn't mean that the GB will close and be ran at that time either. MiHec controls when a GB will close and when he makes it......... I do not.

Interesting, nice big meplat on this boolit. If you can grow this design to 115grn for non-kurtz 9mm, e.g. 9x19mm, I'd have to bite.

You might want to look at the first post.... specifically the picture. 9mm's come in a large variety of barrel dimensions. 0.356" is much too small for decent results.

What type of handles does this mold require? I would love to have it show up ready to run but I would need to know how much extra the handles will cost (including shipping).

I have an extra set of Lyman handles that I purchased for a Lyman 311041 that I was going to order before I read about people having issues with it running undersized.....

Usually, you can invert the HP pins for a flat nose........ this does leave the HP portion below the bottom mols surface so it can be damaged or puncture you or something else. The blank pin precludes that happening. I added a blank pin set to your choices.

Is this short enough to keep the gas check inside the neck on a 357 sig? It looks like the closest we have come to something that would work well in that tiny bottleneck with a gas check. If it does it would be a 1500 to 1700 fps boolit.

Good question. I am going to try the PB mold in .357sig so see how it does. If it don't work well no big deal I load .380. Accurate has a 125gr GC for .357sig in their catalog also.

I just added this to the first post:

Edit: For those of you wondering about it's use in the 357 Sig, here are the parameters.
If you seat the GC version to the base of the neck, 0.035" of the front band shows and the cartridge is under the spec length of the cartridge. If you seat the front band to the end of the case, about half of the GC surface is in the case with no lead exposed. Either way it looks to work out.

The plain base version is about 0.013" shorter on the bearing body than the GC version.

That COAL should do just fine. Most factory .357sig is 1.125" COAL. I have not ran into feeding issues in my Glocks until I start getting above max COAL around 1.145" or so.

No, you weren't overlooked, just located differently. When someone wants off (like in post #158), I put the next person in that place. You're in the #8 listing. Sometimes kinda hard to find when you expect to be at the end of the list.

That's shown on the drawing in post #1...... Approximately 96 gr. solid or 87 gr. hollow point dependent on choice of diameter and alloy.

What concerns one fellow may not concern another.... each to his own. With the atmosphere that has been going on in the gun world, a lot of things are not available. I look at people that leave as not getting a better product/performance.

Usually you get the mold within 2 weeks after you pay. It depends on delays with customs and the postal services.
